James Norman Hall House
The James Norman Hall House is a historic residence located in Colfax, Iowa, United States. This was an early home of author James Norman Hall. His first book was written here, and it figured into his other works, notably ''Oh Millersburg!'' He is best known as a co-author of the 1932 novel ''Mutiny on The Bounty''. Most of Hall's life, however, was lived outside of Colfax and the United States in his later years. The two-story, frame house, follows an L-plan. There is a single story wrap around porch on the west, south and half of the southeast sides. Colfax, Iowa
Colfax is a city in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. Colfax is located approximately 24 miles east of Des Moines. The town was founded in 1866, and was named after Schuyler Colfax, vice president under Ulysses S. Grant. The population was 2,255 at the time of the 2020 census. Newton is the county seat; both were named after Revolutionary War soldiers. History Colfax was laid out in 1866. It is named for Schuyler Colfax. In its heyday, the city of Colfax had two main industries that drew thousands to the area: the mining of coal, and the use of the mineral springs discovered near the city. The first large scale coal mine in Jasper County was the Watson No. 1 Mine, 5 miles southeast of town, connected to the Rock Island by a long railroad spur. From 1881 to 1900, the Jasper County Coal and Railway Company operated a number of mines north of Colfax. James Norman Hall
James Norman Hall (22 April 1887 – 5 July 1951) was an American writer best known for '' The Bounty Trilogy'', a series of historical novels co-authored with Charles Bernard Nordhoff: ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' (1932), '' Men Against the Sea'' (1934), and '' Pitcairn's Island'' (1934). During World War I, Hall uniquely served in the armed forces of three Allied nations—Great Britain as an infantryman, and later France and the United States as an aviator. His wartime honors include the Croix de Guerre, the Médaille Militaire, the Légion d'Honneur, and the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war, he settled in Tahiti, where he and Nordhoff wrote a number of successful adventure novels, many of which were adapted into films. He was also the father of Conrad L. Mutiny On The Bounty (novel)
''Mutiny on the Bounty'' is a 1932 novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, based on the mutiny against Lieutenant William Bligh, commanding officer of the ''Bounty'' in 1789. It has been made into several films and a musical. It was the first of what became ''The Bounty Trilogy'', which continues with '' Men Against the Sea'' (1933), and concludes with '' Pitcairn's Island'' (1934). Plot introduction The novel tells the story through a fictional first-person narrator by the name of Roger Byam, based on a crew member Peter Heywood. Byam, although not one of the mutineers, remains with the ''Bounty'' after the mutiny. He subsequently returns to Tahiti and is eventually arrested and taken back to England to face a court-martial. He and several other members of the crew are eventually acquitted.
