James R. Matthews is an American politician from the state of Pennsylvania, and is a member of the Republican Party. He is a former member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, and was the unsuccessful 2006 Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania as Lynn Swann's running mate. Personal life Matthews graduated from La Salle College High School and attended College of the Holy Cross on a scholarship from the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, Matthews entered the mortgage business and later earned an appointment as a mortgage lending officer with the Veterans Administration (VA) in Philadelphia. After leaving the VA, he returned to the private sector and later started his own mortgage business in 1990. Matthews is the brother of former MSNBC talk-show host Chris Matthews. James Matthews (architect)
James Matthews (December 1819 – 28 June 1898) was a prominent 19th-century architect in northern Scotland who also served as Lord Provost of Aberdeen from 1883 to 1886 during which time he enacted an important city improvement plan. His work as an architect is largely in the Scots baronial style. Life He was born in December 1819, the son of Peter Matthews, a bank teller, living on Thistle Street in Aberdeen. His mother was Margaret Ross, daughter of the architect William Ross who had built the Union Bridge in the centre of the city. In 1834 he was articled to the local architect, Archibald Simpson to train as an architect. Here he met Thomas MacKenzie (1814-1854) whom he later went into partnership with. In 1839 he took the radical step of moving to London to work under George Gilbert Scott where he honed his design and business skills. James Brander Matthews (February 21, 1852 – March 31, 1929) was an American academic, writer and literary critic. He was the first full-time professor of dramatic literature at Columbia University in New York and played a significant role in establishing theater as a subject worthy of formal study by academics. His interests ranged from Shakespeare, Molière, and Ibsen to French boulevard comedies, folk theater, and the new realism of his own time. James William Matthews (26 September 1895 – 26 March 1982), was a New Zealand newspaper editor, gardening writer, and horticulturist. In the 1940s, he founded the monthly magazine ''New Zealand Gardener''. Biography Matthews was born in Ahaura, the son of Elizabeth Agatha (Pothan) Matthews and James Lindsay Matthews, a butcher. He attended Wairoa School in Hawke’s Bay. Between 1915 and 1917, he served in the army, rising to sergeant major. In 1917, Matthews married Esme Elizabeth Hawke; they had a daughter and were divorced in the 1930s. James Robert Matthews FRSE FLS CBE LLD (1889–1978) was a 20th-century Scottish botanist. He was president of the British Ecological Society in 1934 and president of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh 1939 to 1942. Life He was born in the village of Dunning on 8 March 1889, the son of Janet (née McLean) and Robert Matthews. He was educated at the local school then at Perth Academy. He then studied science at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MA in 1911. During the same period he attended the Teacher Training at Moray College in Edinburgh, and qualified as a teacher in the same year. In 1911/12 he undertook a course in botany under Isaac Bayley Balfour. James Duncan Matthews
James Duncan Matthews FRSE (1851–1890) was a short-lived but influential Scottish zoologist who worked closely with James Cossar Ewart. Life He was born 12 November 1851 at 16 Adelphi Court in Aberdeen the son of the future Lord Provost, James Matthews, an architect, and his wife, Elizabeth Duncan. He originally trained as an architect but in 1869 he suffered a severe attack of typhoid fever which greatly damaged his health. He then entered Aberdeen University studying Zoology under James Cossar Ewart who became a lifelong colleague and friend (Ewart was actually the younger of the pair). He travelled to both Australia and America for educational and health reasons. He worked with George Brook at the Fishery Board of Scotland involved in food fish research. James Campbell Matthews
James Campbell Matthews (November 6, 1844—November 1, 1930) was an Albany, New York attorney and judge. He was notable as the first African American law school graduate in New York. He was elected a municipal judge in the late 1890s, which was the highest judicial office attained by an African-American up to that time. Early life James C. Matthews was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 6, 1844. His father was a barber, and the family moved to Albany when James Matthews was a boy. His parents died in 1861, and Matthews was raised by Lydia Mott and Phebe Jones, two Albany anti-slavery activists who later worked in support of racial integration. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1906 to 1931, representing the electorate of Division of Melbourne Ports, Melbourne Ports. Mathews was born in the Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, Victoria Barracks in Melbourne, where his father was regimental tailor, and spent seven years in Sri Lanka as a child when his father was deployed there. James Ewen Matthews (17 August 1869 – 24 November 1950) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Albany, Prince Edward Island. Matthews was based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island during his early career as a teacher, journalist and Charlottetown city alderman. By 1911, he was based in Brandon, Manitoba where he worked as an insurance agent and became President of the Dominion Life Underwriters Association of Canada. He was first elected to Parliament at the Brandon riding in a by-election on 14 November 1938, after an unsuccessful campaign in the riding during the 1935 federal election. Jim Matthews (Leighton, NSW) was a rugby league footballer who played for the Canterbury Bulldogs, Eastern Suburbs clubs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Matthews, a , played 17 matches for the Canterbury Bankstown side in the years (1962–63) before joining Eastern Suburbs the following season at a time when Easts were experiencing the bleakest period in the club's history, they won just 2 matches in '64, 3 in '65 and were winless in '66.
