James L. Roberts Jr.
James Lamar Roberts Jr. (born June 8, 1945) is an American retired jurist who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi from 1992 to 1999. Born in Pontotoc, Mississippi, Roberts received a J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1971, and served as the prosecuting attorney for Pontotoc County, Mississippi from 1972 to 1983. In 1984, Governor Bill Allain appointed him State Commissioner of Public Safety, a position he held for four years. Roberts became a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi in 1992. In April 1999, Roberts resigned form his seat on the Supreme Court to campaign for the office of governor in that year's election. Bill Allain
William Aloysius Allain (February 14, 1928 – December 2, 2013) was an American politician and lawyer who held office as the 59th Governor of Mississippi as a Democrat from 1984 to 1988. Born in Adams County, Mississippi, he attended the University of Notre Dame and received a law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and practiced law in Natchez until he was appointed Assistant Attorney General of Mississippi in 1962. In 1979 he was elected Attorney General of Mississippi. In that capacity he fought utility rate increases and sued to have members of the Mississippi State Legislature removed from executive boards in state government. Allain ran for gubernatorial office in 1983. During the general election allegations emerged that Allain had engaged in sexual activity with transvestites. David Ronald Musgrove (born July 29, 1956) is an American lawyer and Democratic politician who served as the 29th Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from January 16, 1996 to January 11, 2000 and as the 62nd Governor of Mississippi from January 11, 2000 to January 13, 2004. As of 2022, he is the last Democrat to have served as Governor of Mississippi. Musgrove had made an unsuccessful political comeback in a 2008 special election for one of Mississippi's seats in the U.S. Senate, losing to incumbent Senator Roger Wicker. 1999 Mississippi Gubernatorial Election
The 1999 Mississippi gubernatorial election took place on November 2, 1999 to elect the Governor of Mississippi. Incumbent Governor Kirk Fordice, a member of the Republican Party who had been first elected in 1991, was ineligible to run for reelection due to term limits. In the general election, Democrat Lieutenant Governor Ronnie Musgrove won a plurality of the vote over Republican Congressman Mike Parker. Per the Mississippi Constitution, since no candidate had received a majority of the vote, the election was decided by the Mississippi House of Representatives in a contingent election. On January 4, 2000, the House voted 86-36 along partisan lines to elect Musgrove governor. As to date, this remains the last time a Democrat was elected Governor of Mississippi. Pontotoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It has been identified as one of the most corrupt counties in Northern Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,957. Its county seat is Pontotoc. It was created on February 9, 1836, from lands ceded to the United States under the Chickasaw Cession. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes". The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway both pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc County.
