James Karber
James Winfield Karber (July 8, 1914–September 2, 1976) was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician. Karber was born in Elizabethtown, Illinois. He went to the Ridgway Community High School in Ridgway, Illinois. Karber received his bachelor's and law degrees from University of Illinois. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1936. Karber also served as an ordained Baptist minister. He served as state's attorney for Gallatin County, Illinois and was involved with the Democratic Party. Karber was involve with the Gallatin County Bank in Ridgway, Illinois and the oil industry. He was a farmer. Karber served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1947 to 1951. From 1961 to 1969, Karber served on the Illinois Commerce Commission and served as chair of the commission. Elizabethtown, Illinois
Elizabethtown is a village in and the county seat of Hardin County, Illinois, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 299 at the 2010 census, down from 348 at the 2000 census. It is the least-populous county seat in the state. History One of the earliest settlers in the area of the future village of Elizabethtown was James McFarland who arrived around 1809. The village was later founded around the McFarland Tavern built in 1812. The tavern later became the site of the Rose Hotel named after the owner Sarah Rose. Up until the 1960s when it closed as a hotel the Rose Hotel was the oldest continuously run hotel in the state of Illinois and is now a state historic site. Elizabethtown was named after James McFarland's wife. Ridgway, Illinois
Ridgway is a village in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 851. As of 2018, Rebecca Mitchell was the town mayor. History Ridgway was established in 1866 as a construction camp along what would become the Springfield and Illinois South Eastern Railway. It was named for the railroad's president, Thomas S. Ridgway. The village, once home to a popcorn plant, is the former self-proclaimed "Popcorn Capital of the World". Popcorn Day continues as part of the Gallatin County Fair and is held the second Saturday in September. The February 2012 tornadoes, which killed seven in the nearby Harrisburg area, destroyed the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ridgway.
