James Kalacherry
James Kalacherry (20 April 1892 – 27 October 1949) was an Indian educationalist and bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, taking charge of the Diocese of Changanassery. Kalacherry was born on 20 April 1892 in Kainakary. He was ordained priest at the age of 27 on 19 April 1919, and as Rev Dr James Kalacherry, served as Lecturer in Logic at St. Berchmans College, Changanassery, Kottayam, Kerala. In 1927, he was appointed Bishop of Changanacherry (Syro-Malabarese church), India. On 19 May 1930 Bishop Kalacherry presided over the ceremony when Sister Alphonsa joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation at St. Mary’s Forane Church Bharananganam. Sister Alphonsa was canonised as India's first female Catholic saint on 9 November 2008. Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy Of Changanacherry
The Archeparchy of Changanacherry is a Syro-Malabar Catholic archeparchy with an area of 24,595 km2 comprising the districts of Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, and also Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the largest Catholic dioceses in India in terms of area. Joseph Perumthottam is the current Metropolitan Archbishop, serving since 2007. Thomas Joseph Tharayil, Thomas Tharayil has been the auxiliary bishop since 2017. And Joseph Powathil is the bishop emeritus, having served from 1985 to 2007. Sister Alphonsa
Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception or Saint Alphonsa, christened at birth as Anna Muttathupadathu (19 August 1910– 28 July 1946), was a nun and an educator by vocation (profession). She was also known for being a victim soul, visionary and prophetess in the Kottayam pergunna of the erstwhile Travancore province of British India, in the present-day Kerala, India. She is the first woman of Indian origin to be canonised as a saint after decades of enquiry by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints, she is also the first saint of the Syro-Malabar Church, an Eastern Catholic community of Eastern Christianity. In the 1990s, a postal stamp commemorating Alphonsa was published by Kerala state's former minister, K Karunakaran. Travancore
The Kingdom of Travancore ( /ˈtrævənkɔːr/), also known as the Kingdom of Thiruvithamkoor, was an Indian kingdom from c. 1729 until 1949. It was ruled by the Travancore Royal Family from Padmanabhapuram, and later Thiruvananthapuram. At its zenith, the kingdom covered most of the south of modern-day Kerala ( Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram districts, and some portions of Ernakulam district), and the southernmost part of modern-day Tamil Nadu ( Kanyakumari district and some parts of Tenkasi district) with the Thachudaya Kaimal's enclave of Irinjalakuda Koodalmanikyam temple in the neighbouring Kingdom of Cochin.
