James Gillespie (minister)
James Gillespie FRSE (1722–1791) was a Scottish minister and theologian. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1779. He was a cofounder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. Life He was the son of Rev James Gillespie, minister of Arngask. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Perth in August 1745. He became a chaplain at Melvil then was ordained at Abdie in March 1747. He was translated to Dunbarney in March 1751. In November 1757 he was made second charge at St Andrews, becoming first charge in 1765. In November 1768 the university awarded him an honorary doctorate (DD). In 1779 he became Principal of St Mary's College in St Andrews University, replacing the Very Rev Prof James Murison. He was elected Moderator in the same year. In 1786 he was made a Chaplain to the King at the Chapel Royal. He died on 2 June 1791. He is buried in the graveyard of St Andrews Cathedral. The grave lies to the south-west of the central towe ...

James Gillespie (footballer)
James Gillespie (22 March 1868 – 5 August 1932) was a Scottish footballer who played for Clyde, Sunderland Albion, Sunderland, Third Lanark, Ayr and Scotland. Football career Gillespie, an outside right, joined Sunderland Albion from Clyde in 1891, moving on to Sunderland in 1892 when Albion folded. Gillespie won the English league championship twice with Sunderland, in 1893 and 1895, and won the 1895 World Championship. James Gillespie (philanthropist)
James Gillespie (1726–1797) was a Scottish snuff and tobacco merchant in Edinburgh in the 18th century. He never married, and upon his death left a fortune with the request that a hospital and school for the poor should be built, now known as James Gillespie's High School. Gillespie Crescent and Gillespie Street (both north of the school) are named after him. Life James Gillespie was born in Roslin, Midlothian, south of Edinburgh, on 28 April 1726. He grew to fame and fortune in the city as a merchant, working with his younger brother John who ran the family shop, and eventually becoming one of Edinburgh's richest men. The tobacco he sold came from America ( Virginia), from slave plantations. He had a snuff mill at Colinton employing many people, all of whom it is said were treated well.
