James Currie (physician)
James Currie FRS (31 May 1756 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland – 31 August 1805 in Sidmouth) was a Scottish physician, best known for his anthology and biography of Robert Burns and his medical reports on the use of water in the treatment of fever. A watercolour portrait by Horace Hone (1756–1825) is in the National Galleries of Scotland. His early attempt to set up a merchanting business in Virginia was a failure and he returned to Scotland. After qualifying as a medical doctor he established a successful practice in Liverpool, England and after a few years was able to purchase a small estate in Dumfriesshire. He became a Fellow of the London Medical Society and was a founder member of the Liverpool Literary Society. He was an early advocate of the abolition of slavery and wrote several political letters and pamphlets, including one to William Pitt, which made him a number of enemies. Goober & The Peas
Goober & The Peas were a cowpunk band from Detroit, Michigan, known for blending odd humor to a darker side of country music and indie rock (and for Jack White of The White Stripes having served as drummer for a period). The band was known for their frenetic live shows in the early and mid-1990s. The ''Austin Chronicle'' called them "some seriously sick individuals, and quite possibly the most exciting live act in America" after their performance at South by Southwest in 1993. They performed with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Morphine and Uncle Tupelo. Their debut EP, ''The Complete Works of Goober & The Peas'', was followed by an LP of the same name in 1992 and a follow-up LP, ''The Jet-Age Genius of Goober & the Peas'', three years later. James Currie FRSE MA LLD JP (13 April 1863 – 3 November 1930) was a Scottish businessman who was the owner and senior partner of the international shipping company, the Currie Line. He was also a keen amateur botanist, mineralogist and archaeologist, making sufficient impact on the Scottish world of science as to rise to be President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Life Currie was born at Catherine Bank House on Newhaven Road (demolished c.1900) in Leith, Scotland on 13 April 1863. He was the son of Jessie Campbell Maxwell and James Currie (1823-1900), shipowner and shipbuilder, brother of the Glasgow shipbuilder, Donald Currie. His father had come to Leith to run the Leith Hull and Hamburg Steam Packet Company but had branched out to create his own shipping companies.
