James Craig (Australian Politician)
James Frederick Craig (22 December 1911 – 12 January 1989) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971, representing the seat of Toodyay. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Craig was born in Kalgoorlie to Hilda Dagma (née Thornton) and James Burnett Craig. He attended Scotch College, Perth, and then found work as a clerk with Western Australian Government Railways, working at Welshpool. Craig enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939, and saw active duty in the Middle Eastern theatre. He initially returned to the railways after being discharged in 1942, and then from 1947 served as secretary and accountant for a cooperative based in the Swan Valley. The Town of Midland was a local government area in the eastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, centred on the suburb of Midland. History It was established as the Municipality of Helena Vale on 8 November 1895, when it was proclaimed as the local government authority for the rapidly growing town of Helena Vale. The name "Helena Vale" was chosen because of its closeness to the Helena River. The first meeting of the newly elected Municipality of Helena Vale was held at the goods shed of the Midland Railway Company on 18 December 1895. Claude Stubbs
Robert Henry Claude Stubbs (2 April 1905 – 25 May 1998) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1962 to 1980, representing South-East Province. He served as a minister in the government of John Tonkin. Stubbs was born in Northam, Western Australia, to Mary Jane (née Marshall) and Stokes Stubbs. He attended the Kalgoorlie School of Mines and Perth Technical College, and then worked as a miner in Collie. Stubbs moved to Kalgoorlie in 1932, and then to Norseman in 1937, where he eventually became an underground supervisor. He later worked as a health inspector for the Shire of Dundas. Stubbs entered parliament at the 1962 Legislative Council elections, defeating John Cunningham (the sitting Liberal Party member). Jerry Dolan
John "Jerry" Dolan (25 December 1901 – 26 December 1986) was an Australian rules footballer and coach in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) before becoming a politician. He played for as well as coached East Fremantle and was also a coach at East Perth. After leaving football, Dolan served as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Dolan originally played in the Goldfields Football Association with Kalgoorlie City and was recruited to East Fremantle after two seasons. He was used mostly as a centre half forward in his time at East Fremantle and participated in their 1925, 1928, 1929 and 1931 premiership teams. Dolan also played in their 1930 and 1933 premiership sides, as captain-coach. He represented Western Australia at the 1924 Hobart Carnival and captain-coached his state in the 1933 Sydney Carnival. 1971 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 20 February 1971 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The four-term Liberal- Country Party coalition government, led by Premier David Brand, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Tonkin. This was the first election in which no seats were uncontested since the introduction of responsible government in 1890. This was partly due to the Democratic Labor Party deciding to contest every seat up for election in both Houses. There was a large increase in the number of electors, because this was the first election after 18 year olds had been given the vote. Ross Hutchinson
Sir Ross Hutchinson, DFC (10 September 1914 – 19 December 1999) was an Australian rules footballer, coach and politician. He played for and coached East Fremantle, West Perth and South Fremantle in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) before spending 27 years as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. Early life Hutchinson was born in Worsley in 1914. He was educated at Deanmill before attending Wesley College in Perth from the age of 14. Football career Hutchinson was used in a variety of positions during his football career including centreman, half back and half forward. In his first two seasons he won the Lynn Medal as East Fremantle's fairest and best player. He captain-coached the club to a premiership in 1937, as a half back flanker. The position was first created in 1919, in the first ministry formed by James Mitchell, and has existed in almost every government since. Minister for Transport is a position in the government of Western Australia, currently held by Rita Saffioti of the Labor Party.
