James Chapman (explorer)
James Chapman (27 December 1831, Cape Town – 4 February 1872, Kimberley), was an explorer, hunter, trader and photographer from the Cape Colony. A son of James Chapman and Elizabeth Greeff of Malmesbury and brother to Henry Samuel Chapman, he was educated in Cape Town and left for Durban when 14 years old. He was appointed as chief clerk in the Native Affairs Department in 1848. A year later he settled in Potchefstroom where he became one of the first storekeepers. Shortly after, in 1852, he ventured across the Limpopo River and into Bamangwato country. He became friendly with Khama, one of the sons of Sekgoma, the Bamangwato chief, enlisting his aid in reaching the Chobe River. Early the following year found him on the Zambesi River which he explored to within of the Victoria Falls, almost beating David Livingstone to their discovery. By 1854 he had teamed up with Samuel H. James Chapman (bishop)
James Chapman (1799–1879) was the first Anglican Bishop of Colombo, in British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), serving from 1845 to 1861. Life He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1823, and Cambridge Master of Arts (MA Cantab) in 1826. He was made deacon in Ely in 1824 and ordained priest the next year in Chichester. He became a Fellow of King's College, one of the Masters of Eton, and Evening Lecturer at Windsor. In 1834, he was appointed to the Rectory of Dunton Wayletts, in Essex, the patronage of which was with King's College. On 7 November 1845, he was consecrated as the first Bishop of Colombo at St Peter's Church, Colombo, and received the degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD) from his University. He has written several books on the history of British popular culture, including work on cinema, television and comics. Biography James Chapman was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and attended Wales High School during the 1980s. He took his BA (History) and MA (Film Studies) at the University of East Anglia and then undertook his doctoral research at Lancaster University, completing his thesis on the role of official film propaganda in Britain during the Second World War. James Chapman (born 19 May 1986) was an English cricketer. Born in Nottingham, he was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Derbyshire in 2004.
