James Bowen (Royal Navy Officer)
James Bowen (1751 – 27 April 1835) was an officer of the Royal Navy. Family and early life Bowen was born in Ilfracombe, Devon, in 1751. His father was a maritime trader who sailed from the Bristol Channel to West Africa and the West Indies. His younger brother, Richard Bowen, also embarked on a career at sea. James joined his father's ship in 1764 and commanded his own ship in the African and West India trade by 1776. He entered the Royal Navy as a master, serving aboard the 38-gun under Captain John MacBride. He followed MacBride to a succession of ships in the period 1781 to 1789 and saw action at the Battle of Dogger Bank on 5 August 1781. He was afterwards inspecting agent of transports in the Thames. James Bowen (artist)
James Bowen (died 1774) was an English painter and topographer. Bowen was a native of Shrewsbury, where he died. The antiquarian John Bowen (antiquary), John Bowen was his son. Works He made a collection for a history of Shropshire, having taken church notes, sketches of monuments, transcripts of records, etc. when he was accompanying William Mytton through the county. One of Bowen's works is a view of the church of Mary in the Battlefield, Shrewsbury, and he produced also some maps. Richard Gough (antiquary), Richard Gough bought all the genealogical and topographical materials which Bowen had amassed, and they formed part of the manuscripts and similar relics which Gough bequeathed to the Bodleian Library. He was the long-time host of the ITV game show '' Bullseye'', which he presented from its beginning in 1981 through to the end of its original run in 1995. Bowen brought Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood together, and introduced Sinatra to Mel Tillis for their album, ''Mel & Nancy.'' Early life Bowen was born in Santa Rita, New Mexico, United States. His family moved to Dumas, Texas, when he was eight years old. Singing career Bowen began as a teenage recording star in 1957 with " I'm Stickin' with You".
