James Bismark Holden
James Bismark Holden (October 4, 1876 – April 10, 1956) was a businessman and politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1906 to 1913 as a member of the Liberal Party. He also served as the mayor of Vegreville, Alberta from 1917 to 1945. Alberta legislature Holden ran for election to the Alberta Legislature in a by-election held on July 16, 1906, as a Liberal candidate in the electoral district of Vermilion. He won the seat by acclamation to hold the district for his party. Upon redistribution in 1909, Holden ran in the new electoral district of Vegreville that year and was re-elected. He retired from the legislature at its dissolution in 1913. Other activities Holden moved to Vancouver to get into the shipping business, but soon moved back to Alberta when it went bust. Vegreville () is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is on Alberta Highway 16A, Highway 16A approximately east of Edmonton, Alberta's capital city. It was incorporated as a town in 1906, and that year also saw the founding of the ''Vegreville Observer'', a weekly newspaper for the region. A large percentage of Vegreville's population is of Ukrainian Canadian descent, and it is home to the Vegreville egg, the world's second largest pysanka (Ukrainian Easter egg). Victoria (Alberta Federal Electoral District)
Victoria was a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1909 to 1925. This riding was created in 1907, two years after Alberta was created as a province, from parts of Edmonton and Strathcona ridings. It took its name from the Victoria Settlement on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. When first created, it was huge, covering most of the northeast quadrant of the province of Alberta. The Victoria riding was abolished in 1924 when it was redistributed into Battle River, Camrose, and two newly created ridings, Vegreville and Wetaskiwin. The 1935 Canadian federal election was held on October 14, 1935, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 18th Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of William Lyon Mackenzie King won a majority government, defeating Prime Minister R. B. Bennett's Conservatives. The central issue was the economy, which was still in the depths of the Great Depression. In office since the 1930 election, Bennett had sought to stimulate the economy during his first few years through a policy of high tariffs and trade within the British Empire. In the last months of his time in office, he reversed his position, copying the popular New Deal of Franklin Roosevelt in the United States. Upset about high unemployment and inaction by the federal government, voters were unwilling to allow the Conservatives to continue to govern, despite their change of policy.
