James Atkinson Abrams
James Atkinson Abrams (November 11, 1844 – April 24, 1914) was a business owner and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Nanaimo in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1878 to 1882. He was born in Napanee, Ontario, apprenticed there as a tanner and came to Victoria in 1867. He worked as a foreman in two tanneries before moving to Nanaimo, where he established the Nanaimo Tanning Company in 1878, with himself as president. In the same year, he married Georgina Wenborn. In 1886, he became a partner in a business in Vancouver. Later that year, his business in Nanaimo was destroyed in a fire. Abrams served on Nanaimo City Council in 1889 and also served as a justice of the peace. He died in Cumberland at the age of 69. Nanaimo is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. Demographics Geography The riding contains most of the city of Nanaimo plus the uninhabited Five Finger Island, Snake Island and Hudson Rocks which are in the Nanaimo C electoral area. History The district was known as Nanaimo and the Islands from 1941 to 1963. It was formed of parts of the former ridings of Alberni-Nanaimo and The Islands. In the 1966 election the Nanaimo riding name was restored and the southern part of the riding became Saanich and the Islands. That area is now part of Saanich North and the Islands. Tanning (leather)
Tanning is the process of treating skins and hides of animals to produce leather. A tannery is the place where the skins are processed. Tanning hide into leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein structure of skin, making it more durable and less susceptible to decomposition and coloring. Before tanning, the skins are dehaired, degreased, desalted and soaked in water over a period of six hours to two days. Historically this process was considered a noxious or "odoriferous trade" and relegated to the outskirts of town. Historically, tanning used tannin, an acidic chemical compound from which the tanning process draws its name, derived from the bark of certain trees. A justice of the peace (JP) is a judicial officer of a lower or '' puisne'' court, elected or appointed by means of a commission (letters patent) to keep the peace. Cumberland, British Columbia
Cumberland is an incorporated village municipality east of Perseverance Creek, near the east coast of central Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The Comox Valley community is west of BC Highway 19 and is by road about northwest of Nanaimo and southwest of Courtenay. Prospecting & preliminary activity Although First Nations had long known the existence of coal in the area, J.W. Mackay discovered coal near today's town site while exploring in 1852. Armed with such knowledge, Sam Cliffe formed a syndicate, which in 1869 staked claims on Perseverance (formerly Coal) Creek that flows northwest into Comox Lake. The group hacked a trail to today's Royston. Their Union Coal Mining Co., named to honour the 1871 union of British Columbia with Canada, graded sections for a rail bed along this route. Swindle Island
Swindle Island is an island on the North Coast of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located south of Princess Royal Island on the Inside Passage shipping route. The small First Nations community of Klemtu is located on its eastern side across from Cone Island. Price Island lies just south of Swindle Island. Both are located within the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District. Swindle Island's southernmost extremity is Jorkins Point, which lies at the confluence of Milbanke Sound and Finlayson Channel.
