James Appathurai
James Appathurai is a Canadian diplomat and academic. He is the current NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber, a position he was appointed to in September 2021. Appathurai has worked for NATO since 1998 and was its spokesperson from 2004 to 2010. From December 2010 until April 2022, Appathurai was the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy. During this time, he took on the role of Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, and held discussions with the government of Georgia about potential NATO accession. In 2021, President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili awarded Appathurai the Order of the Golden Fleece for his contribution to Georgia–NATO relations. Order Of The Golden Fleece (Georgia)
The Order of the Golden Fleece ( ka, ოქროს საწმისის ორდენი, ''ok'ros sats'misis ordeni'') is an honor awarded by the government of Georgia. It was established in 1998 and comes next in rank to the Order of Saint Nicholas. The Order is named after the mythical Golden Fleece, which was held in Colchis in what is now western Georgia. The 2024 Bilderberg Conference was held between May 30–June 2, 2024 in Madrid, Spain at the Eurostars Suites Mirasierra hotel. Georgia–NATO Relations
Georgia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) enjoy good relations. Georgia is not currently a member of NATO, but has been promised by NATO to be admitted in the future. Cooperation officially began in 1994 when Georgia joined the NATO-run Partnership for Peace. Georgia has moved quickly following the Rose Revolution in 2003 to seek closer ties and eventual membership with NATO (although the previous administration had also indicated that they desired NATO membership a year before the revolution took place).
