James Waddell Alexander II
James Waddell Alexander II (September 19, 1888 September 23, 1971) was a mathematician and topologist of the pre-World War II era and part of an influential Princeton topology elite, which included Oswald Veblen, Solomon Lefschetz, and others. He was one of the first members of the Institute for Advanced Study (1933–1951), and also a professor at Princeton University (1920–1951). Early life, family, and personal life James was born on September 19, 1888, in Sea Bright, New Jersey. Alexander came from an old, distinguished Princeton family. He was the only child of the American portrait painter John White Alexander and Elizabeth Alexander. His maternal grandfather, James Waddell Alexander, was the president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society. James Thomas Alexander
James Thomas Alexander (August 25, 1888 – January 16, 1952) was a United States Navy Captain (United States)#U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, captain who served as the 37th Naval Governor of Guam, naval governor of Guam. He served as a commanding officer of ships during both World War I and World War II, receiving the Navy Cross (United States), Navy Cross for his actions during the First World War. He was an outspoken advocate for increased naval power and bases to improve American defensive networks. As governor, he improved the defenses of Guam by building additional military facilities, dredging the Apra Harbor, increasing the officers on the island, and building a sea wall. James Waddel Alexander (March 13, 1804 – July 31, 1859) was an American Presbyterian minister and theologian who followed in the footsteps of his father, the Rev. Archibald Alexander. Early life Alexander was born in 1804 in Louisa County, Virginia, the eldest son of the Rev. Archibald Alexander and his wife Janetta Waddel. He was born on the Hopewell estate near present-day Gordonsville at the residence of his maternal grandfather after whom he was named, the blind Presbyterian preacher James Waddel. His younger brothers included William Cowper Alexander (1806–1874), president of the New Jersey State Senate and first president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and Joseph Addison Alexander (1809–1860), a biblical scholar. At the time of Alexander's birth, his father was president of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. General Sir James Edward Alexander (16 October 1803 – 2 April 1885) was a Scottish traveller, writer and soldier in the British Army. Alexander was the driving force behind the placement of Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames Embankment. Background Born in Stirling, he was the eldest son of Edward Alexander of Powis, Clackmannanshire, and his second wife Catherine Glas, daughter of John Glas, Provost of Stirling. The family purchased Powis House near Stirling in 1808 from James Mayne (his uncle by marriage) for £26,500. His father, a banker, had to sell Powis House in 1827 on collapse of the Stirling Banking Company. He received his training in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. James Alexander, 4th Earl of Caledon, (11 July 1846 – 27 April 1898), styled Viscount Alexander from birth until 1855, was a soldier and politician. Early life He was born at his family's home in Carlton House Terrace, London on 11 July 1846. He was the eldest son of James Du Pre Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon and his wife, Lady Jane Grimston. He was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. He succeeded to the title Earl of Caledon at the age of nine upon the death of his father in 1855. Career Lord Caledon was elected to sit in the House of Lords as an Irish representative peer in 1877 and was Deputy Lieutenant of County Tyrone. James Peterkin Alexander
James Peterkin Alexander (June 27, 1835 – April 16, 1912) was a Scottish-born farmer and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Turtle Mountain from 1881 to 1883 and Souris from 1886 to 1888 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. Biography Alexander was born on June 27, 1835, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to William Alexander, and was educated at the normal school and the University of Edinburgh. In 1872, he married Margaret Crawford. Alexander was a Glasgow merchant until 1878 when he was forced out of business by the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank. In November 1879, he emigrated to the Turtle Mountain area of southern Manitoba. Alexander was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1883. He was a magistrate and coroner for the province and served as registrar of deeds for Souris County from 1883 to 1886.
