James Adrianus Martensz
James Adrianus Martensz (28 October 1825 – 12 October 1872) was a proctor and member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon (1865–1872). James Adrianus Martensz was born on 28 October 1825 in Colombo, Ceylon, the oldest son (second of four children) of Andries Nicolaas Martensz (1787–?) and Johanna Henrietta née Helmers (1796–1861). In 1846 he was appointed as a proctor (a position similar to a solicitor) of the District Court. On 11 October 1852 Martensz married Theodora Elizabeth Murray (1828–1878), the daughter of Robert Murray and Elizabeth née Howel, at the Holy Trinity Church, St Sebastian, Colombo. They had two children: Georgiana Theodora (1860–1931); and James Andries (1861–1900), a tea planter, who owned and managed a tea plantation in Koslanda, near Haputale in the Badulla District, Uva Province. A justice of the peace (JP) is a judicial officer of a lower or '' puisne'' court, elected or appointed by means of a commission (letters patent) to keep the peace. In past centuries the term commissioner of the peace was often used with the same meaning. James De Alwis
James De Alwis (1823–1878) was a lawyer, writer, poet and a prominent colonial era legislator from Ceylon. He was an unofficial member of the Legislative Council. He is remembered for his writings that included several works on Buddhism. Educated at the Colombo Academy as one of its first students, he was part of the ''Macaulay of Ceylon'' along with Frederick Nell and his brother Louis, Charles Ambrose Lorensz, John Prins, Charle Ferdinands and Dandris de Silva Gunaratna inspired by the Young England movement. Qualified as a Proctor, he went on to become an Advocate and served as a District Judge and Police Magistrate. Richard Morgan (Ceylonese Judge)
Sir Richard Francis Morgan (21 February 1821 – 27 January 1876) was a Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) lawyer, who served as the 13th Queen's Advocate of Ceylon and acting Chief Justice of Ceylon. He was the first Asian in the British Empire to receive a Knighthood and first Ceylonese to be a member of the Governor's Executive Council and was an unofficial (Burgher) member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon. He was the Crown Advocate who prosecuted famed bandit Saradiel. Sir Richard was the 11th and youngest child of Owen Richard Morgan, port magistrate of Colombo, and Behrana Lucretea Lourensz. Charles Ambrose Lorensz
Charles Ambrose Lorensz (1829–1871) was a lawyer, a journalist and a colonial era legislator from Ceylon. He was a member of the Legislative Council. He is credited for initiating Sri Lankan journalism and was the founder and editor of the island's first local news paper, the ''Ceylon Examiner''. He was a District Judge and was an Acting Queen’s Advocate. Born to a Burger family, Lorensz was educated at the Colombo Academy, winning the Turnour Prize in 1846 with Frederick Nell. Beginning his legal practice in 1849, he became a barrister at the Lincoln's Inn in 1855. He was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society, Ceylon Branch . After serving as the District Judge of Chilaw in 1855, he went back to being a practicing lawyer. Legislative Council Of Ceylon
The Legislative Council of Ceylon was the legislative body of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1833, along with the Executive Council of Ceylon, on the recommendations of the Colebrooke-Cameron Commission. James Aubrey Martensz
James Aubrey Martensz (25 September 1885 – 26 March 1963) was a Ceylonese lawyer and politician. James Aubrey Martensz was born 25 September 1885, the oldest son, in a family of twelve, to James Andries Martensz (a planter) and Edith Maud née de Saram. He was the grandson of James Adrianus Martensz, a member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon. He received his education at Royal College, Colombo and then at the Ceylon Law College, where he qualified as a Proctor. Marthensz served for a number of years as the private secretary to Justice Wendt and in 1908 was admitted to the bar. He then joined the legal firm of F. J. & G. de Saram, eventually becoming a senior partner in the firm. He was created a Justice of the Peace and Unofficial magistrate.
