James A. Jones
James Alfred Jones (June 3, 1820 – February 26, 1894) was a nineteenth-century American politician from Virginia. Early life Jones was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. In 1820, he graduated from Randolph-Macon College. In 1839, he attained a Master of Arts from the University of Virginia. Career After studying law in Richmond, Jones settled in Petersburg, Virginia, where he practiced law. In 1850, Jones was elected to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850. He was one of four delegates elected from the central Piedmont delegate district made up of his home district of Petersburg City, and Chesterfield and Prince George Counties. Mecklenburg County, Virginia
Mecklenburg County is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,319. Its county seat is Boydton. History Mecklenburg County was organized on March 1, 1765, having split from Lunenburg County in 1764 as the result of the passage of an act by the Virginia General Assembly. The Senate of Virginia is the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. The Senate is composed of 40 senators representing an equal number of single-member constituent districts. The Senate is presided over by the lieutenant governor of Virginia. Prior to the American War of Independence, the upper house of the General Assembly was represented by the Virginia Governor's Council, consisting of up to 12 executive counselors appointed by the colonial royal governor as advisers and jurists. It is known as the Reform Convention because it liberalized Virginia political institutions. Petersburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,458. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines Petersburg (along with the city of Colonial Heights) with Dinwiddie County for statistical purposes. The city is south of the commonwealth (state) capital city of Richmond.
