Jamba, Cuando Cubango
Jamba is a town in Angola, located in the municipality of Luiana in the southeastern province of Cuando, just north of the Namibian border along the Caprivi Strip. The town is best known as the former military headquarters of UNITA, a rebel movement supported by South Africa and the United States that fought the Soviet-aligned and supported government in the Angolan Civil War, a Cold War conflict. Etymology The name Jamba means ''elephant in'' Umbundu, a language spoken in Southern Angola. UNITA headquarters Jamba served as UNITA's headquarters from 1976 until 1992. Colonel Almerindo Jaka Jamba (21 March 1949 – 1 April 2018) was an Angolan politician and former rebel leader in UNITA. Jaka Jamba studied in Portugal where he received a degree in philosophy. Sousa Jamba (born 9 January 1966) is an Angolan author and journalist. Biography Sousa Jamba was born in 1966 in Dondi, Huambo, in central Angola. His family were all supporters of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which fought alongside the MPLA (the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola) in the Angolan War of Independence (1961–75) and then against the MPLA in the ensuing civil war (1975–2002). In 1975, nine-year-old Jamba with his family left the country, fleeing the violence following Angola's independence, and went to Zambia, where he lived as a refugee, before going to England. The Japan Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (JAMBA) is a treaty between Australia and Japan to minimise harm to the major areas used by birds which migrate between the two countries. JAMBA was first developed on February 6, 1974 and came into force on April 30, 1981.
