Jamacha (pronounced: HAM-e-shaw) is a neighborhood in the District 4 area of San Diego, California. It is generally bounded by the city of Lemon Grove to the East, unincorporated La Presa to the South, Encanto to the North of Imperial Ave. (at Atkins Ave,), and both Skyline and Lomita to the West. Major thoroughfares include Lisbon Street, Jamacha Road, Woodrow Avenue, and Imperial Ave. The neighborhood is part of the Skyline-Paradise Hills Community Planning Area. History Jamacha is named for the Jamacha Valley and Rancho Jamacha, a Mexican land grant estate. The name was variously spelled ''Xamacha'', ''Jamacha', 'Jamacho'', and ''Gamacha'' until ''Jamacha'' was fixed as the official spelling in the early 20th century. Rancho Jamacha
Rancho Jamacha was a Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California, given in 1840 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Apolinaria Lorenzana. Jamacha is an Indian name. The grant extended eastward from Rancho de la Nación along the Sweetwater River Valley. The southwestern section of the rancho is now covered by the waters of Sweetwater Reservoir created in 1888. History Apolinaria Lorenzana (1790–1884) came to California with her mother in 1800. When her mother returned to Mexico, Apolinaria moved to San Diego, under the care of Raymundo Carrillo. Apolinaria Lorenzana remained a single woman devoted to the church. As a result of her religious devotion, she was called "La Beata", meaning "the pious one". Lomita is the official name, but also known as Lomita Village, is an urban neighborhood in the Southeastern area of San Diego, California. It is bounded by Meadowbrook Drive, Jamacha and Skyline to the North, unincorporated La Presa to the south, Skyline to the West and Jamacha to the East.
