Jalen Catalon
Jalen Catalon (born March 15, 2001) is an American football safety who plays for the Texas Longhorns. Early life and high school Catalon grew up in Mansfield, Texas and attended Mansfield Legacy High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. As a sophomore, he recorded 183 total tackles with seven tackles for loss and nine interceptions. Catalon was named the All-Area Defensive Player of the Year by ''The Dallas Morning News'' as a junior after recording 101 tackles, three interceptions, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He also started at quarterback and passed for 1,122 yards and 15 touchdowns with 1,064 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing ad Mansfield Legacy advanced to the 5A Division II state semifinals. Safety is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. Redshirt, in United States college athletics, is a delay or suspension of an athlete's participation in order to lengthen their period of eligibility. Typically, a student's athletic eligibility in a given sport is four seasons, aligning with the four years of academic classes typically required to earn a bachelor's degree at an American college or university. However, in a redshirt year, student athletes may attend classes at the college or university, practice with an athletic team, and "suit up" (wear a team uniform) for play – but they may compete in only a limited number of games (see " Use of status" section).
