Jaha Dukureh
Jaha Dukureh (born 1989 or 1990) is a Gambian women's right activist and anti-female genital mutilation campaigner. Dukureh was subjected to female genital mutilation in the Gambia when she was a little more than a week old. She is the founder and executive director of Safe Hands for Girls, an organization working to end FGM, and was the lead campaigner in ''The Guardian''s End FGM Guardian Global Media Campaign. In April 2016, she was named to the 2016 ''Time'' 100 list. Dukureh was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in February 2018, has won the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, and is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. A feature film about Jaha's life was released by Accidental Pictures and ''The Guardian''. Her memoir, ''I Will Scream to the World'' was published by Kensington Books in 2024. Halifa Sallah (born 1953) is a retired Gambian politician and former National Assembly member for Serrekunda Constituency. He currently serves as the secretary-general of the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS). He served as a spokesman and advisor to President Adama Barrow from during the 2016 presidential election campaign until March 2017. Sallah co-founded PDOIS in 1986, and was elected as its secretary-general in 1987. He has been a major contributor to ''Foroyaa'', the party's newspaper. He contested elections for the House of Representatives in 1987 and 1992, and was an opposer of the Yahya Jammeh regime. People's Democratic Organisation For Independence And Socialism
The People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) is a socialist political party in the Gambia. Since 2005, it has been part of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD). It was part of Coalition 2016 in the 2016 presidential election, whose candidate, Adama Barrow, defeated long-time incumbent Yahya Jammeh. The PDOIS also publishes a party newspaper, '' Foroyaa'', which was noted for its opposition to the Jammeh regime. History The party was founded on 31 July 1986. 2021 Gambian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Gambia on 4 December 2021. The result was a victory for incumbent President Adama Barrow of the National People's Party, who received 53% of the vote, defeating five other candidates. Electoral system The President of the Gambia is elected in a single round by first-past-the-post voting for a five-year term. Registered voters receive a voter's card which must be presented at the assigned polling station. After verifying eligibility, a polling officer marks the voter's left forefinger with indelible ink. Instead of using paper ballots, elections in the Gambia are conducted using marbles.
