Jaculinykus
''Jaculinykus'' (meaning "Jaculus claw") is an extinct genus of alvarezsaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Baruungoyot Formation of Mongolia. The genus contains a Monotypic taxon, single species, ''J. yaruui'', known from a nearly complete articulated skeleton including bones of the skull. ''Jaculinykus'' is notable for its unique hand, which has a hypertrophied first digit and greatly reduced second digit, which is intermediate between the tridactyl hand of ''Shuvuuia'' and monodactyl hand of ''Linhenykus''. Discovery and naming The ''Jaculinykus'' holotype specimen, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, MPC-D 100/209, was discovered in sediments of the Baruungoyot Formation (Nemegt locality), of Ömnögovi Province, Mongolia. Baruungoyot Formation
The Baruungoyot Formation (also known as Barun Goyot) is a geological formation dating to the Late Cretaceous Period. It is located within and is widely represented in the Gobi Desert Basin, in the Ömnögovi Province of Mongolia. Description It was previously known as the Lower Nemegt Beds occurring beneath the Nemegt Formation and above the Djadokhta Formation. It has been suggested that the Djadokhta and Baruungoyot Formations are lower and upper parts, respectively, of the same lithological unit and the boundary between the two does not exist. The stratotype of the Baruungoyot Formation is the Khulsan locality, east of Nemegt. At Nemegt, only the uppermost barungoyotian beds are visible. ''Haplocheirus'' (, meaning "simple hand") is an extinct genus of theropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic Shishugou Formation of Xinjiang in China. It is generally considered to be an alvarezsauroid, although some researchers have questioned this assignment. The genus contains a single species, ''H. sollers'', which is known from a mostly complete skeleton including the skull. The quality of the preservation in the only known specimen of ''Haplocheirus'' is near-perfect and preserves the animal in three dimensions. This makes ''Haplocheirus'' one of the most well-known Jurassic coelurosaurs from anywhere in the world. The jaculus (or iaculus, pl. ''jaculi'', meaning "thrown" in Latin) is a small mythical serpent or dragon. It can be shown with wings and sometimes has front legs. It is also sometimes known as the javelin snake. In Greek mythology It was said that the jaculus hid in the trees and sprang out at its victims. The force of it launching itself at the victim led to the association with javelins. ''Bannykus'' is an alvarezsaur from the Early Cretaceous of the Bayin-Gobi Formation of Inner Mongolia, China. It includes one species, ''Bannykus wulatensis''. Discovery The holotype of ''Bannykus wulatensis'' is IVPP V25026, a partially-articulated incomplete skeleton of an 8 year old subadult. The holotype comes from the Bayin-Gobi Formation in Chaoge, Wulatehouqi, Inner Mongolia, China. It was discovered in 2009 and in 2012, its remains were displayed in Japan under the unofficial name "Wulatesaurus".
