Jacqui Chan
Jacqueline "Jacqui" Chan (born 1939) is a Chinese-Trinidadian dancer, actress and singer. Early life Chan was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago to a Chinese mother and a Chinese-Russian father. Her parents had both migrated to British Guiana as indentured laborers to work on a sugar cane plantation after the abolition of slavery. She moved to London at age 16, and studied ballet at the Elmhurst Ballet School. She enrolled on a four-year teaching course at the Royal Academy of Dancing, but quit after a year and joined the cast of '' Teahouse of the August Moon''. Acting career Chan became a principal dancer in the London West End production of ''The King and I'', and was soon placed in the London stage production of '' The World of Suzie Wong''. In the immensely successful film version of the play, she played, against type, the rather plain Gwennie earning appreciative notice. Simon Dupree And The Big Sound
Simon Dupree and the Big Sound were a British psychedelic band formed in 1966 by brothers Derek (vocals), Phil (vocals, saxophone, trumpet), and Ray Shulman (guitar, violin, trumpet, vocals); also known for their later prog rock band, Gentle Giant. Career They started as The Howling Wolves and then became The Road Runners, playing R&B around the Portsmouth area, home of the Shulman brothers, becoming Simon Dupree and the Big Sound in early 1966. Kites (song)
"Kites" is a ballad written by Hal Hackady and Lee Pockriss. It was first recorded by American country folk-singing trio the Rooftop Singers as their last single in 1967. The song then became a hit for the British psychedelic band Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, featuring the three Shulman brothers who later formed the progressive rock band Gentle Giant. Their first releases had not been successful and they looked to their manager, John King, for inspiration. He suggested "Kites", which he had obtained from Robbins' Music. It was not their preferred style but King insisted. The song was recorded at Abbey Road in London using unconventional instruments such as a wind machine and included a spoken interlude in Chinese, composed of "sweet nothings" and performed by the Chinese-Trinidadian actress Jacqui Chan, a friend of the band. ''Ghost Squad'', known as ''GS5'' for its third series, was a crime drama series that ran between 1961 and 1964, about an elite division of Scotland Yard. In each episode the Ghost Squad would investigate cases that fell outside the scope of normal police work. Despite the show and characters being fictional, an actual division did exist within the Metropolitan Police at the time. Inspiration for the series was taken from a book of the same title written by John Gosling, a retired police officer and former member of the real-life squad it is based on. This squad operated only in London, but the members of the fictional team travel all over Europe, sometimes to fictitious countries.
