Jacques Teuira
Jacques "Jacky" Teuira (born 1933) is a French politician and was the President of French Polynesia from 12 February 1987 to 9 December 1987. Biography He served as the President of the Assembly of French Polynesia from April 1983 to March 1987. Teuira's predecessor, Gaston Flosse, was the first President of French Polynesia, and the head of Teuira's political party, the pro-autonomy Tahoera'a Huiraatira. In February 1987, Flosse resigned from the presidency in order to become the first, and only, French state secretary in charge of Pacific affairs. Flosse chose Jacky Teuira as his handpicked successor as President over his longtime protégé, Alexandre Léontieff. Teuira was sworn in as President of French Polynesia on 12 February 1987. Teuira's administration in French Polynesia would last less than a year. Gaston Flosse
Gaston Flosse (born 24 June 1931) is a French politician who has been President of French Polynesia on five separate occasions. He is currently a member of the Senate of France and has been a French junior minister under Jacques Chirac. He received sentences for corruption, which are under appeal. Life and career Flosse was born in Rikitea, Mangareva, French Polynesia. He is of both French and Polynesian descent. Flosse supports the current autonomy arrangement between French Polynesia and France and has led the conservative pro-autonomy and anti-independence party Tahoera'a Huiraatira (People's Rally for the Republic Party) for more than 20 years. He was the vice-president of the government council from 1982 to 1984, when more autonomy was gained and he became President of the Governing Council. Alexandre Léontieff
Alexandre Léontieff (October 20, 1948 – March 2, 2009) was a French politician and the President of French Polynesia from 1987 to 1991. Biography Personal life Léontieff was born on October 20, 1948, at Teahupo'o, Tahiti, near the world famous surfing location. He obtained a degree in economics from the University of Rennes in 1970. Léontieff was of Russian ancestry and the brother of French Polynesian politician Boris Léontieff, a one time cabinet minister in the government of Gaston Flosse and former mayor of Arue, French Polynesia. Boris Léontieff later became the leader of his own political party, Fetia Api. He is believed to have been killed in a small plane crash in May 2002 while on a political campaign trip in the Tuamotu Archipelago. The plane's wreckage and passengers have never been found. Assembly Of French Polynesia
The Assembly of French Polynesia (french: Assemblée de la Polynésie française, Tahitian: Te apo'ora'a rahi o te fenua Mā'ohi) is the unicameral legislature of French Polynesia, an overseas country of the French Republic. It is located at Place Tarahoi in Pape'ete, Tahiti. It was established in its current form in 1996 although a Tahitian Assembly was first created in 1824. It consists of 57 members who are elected by popular vote for five years; the electoral system is based upon proportional representation in six multi-seat constituencies. Every constituency is represented by at least three representatives. Since 2001, the parity bill binds that the number of women matches the number of men elected to the Assembly. The official language of the Assembly is French. The most recent election was held in 2018 and resulted in a victory of the Tapura Huiraatira, which won 38 seats.
