Jacques Ricard
Jacques Ricard (6 August 1929 – 28 December 2018), was a French biophysicist known for studies of plant enzymes and for developing the concept of enzyme memory. Personal life Jacques Ricard was born on 6 August 1929 in Marseille, where he spent his early life and education. After retirement he lived in Lourmarin, in the Vaucluse at the edge of the Luberon, and he died in Le Nayrac, Aveyron on 28 December 2018. He married Katharina (Käty), philosopher of science and author of ''Penser la Vie''. They had one son, Philippe, a cardiologist. Education Ricard studied mathematics and biology at Aix-Marseille University and the Sorbonne (Thèse d'État, 1957). Career Ricard started his career as a young researcher in statistics in the laboratory of Georges Teissier at the Sorbonne. In the fields of biochemistry and pharmacology an allosteric regulator (or allosteric modulator) is a substance that binds to a site on an enzyme or receptor distinct from the active site, resulting in a conformational change that alters the protein's activity, either enhancing or inhibiting its function. In contrast, substances that bind directly to an enzyme's active site or the binding site of the endogenous ligand of a receptor are called orthosteric regulators or modulators. The site to which the effector binds is termed the ''allosteric site'' or ''regulatory site''. Allosteric sites allow effectors to bind to the protein, often resulting in a conformational change and/or a change in protein dynamics. Peter Schuster
Peter K. Schuster (born 7 March 1941) is a theoretical chemist known for his work with the German Nobel Laureate Manfred Eigen in developing the quasispecies model. His work has made great strides in the understanding of viruses and their replication, as well as theoretical mechanisms in the origin of life. Biography Schuster was born in Vienna, Austria and graduated with highest honors from "gymnasium". He studied chemistry and physics at the University of Vienna and earned his PhD in 1967. He was a Postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. Together with Eigen, Schuster developed the quasispecies model. Mario Markus (born 29 July 1944) is a German-Chilean physicist who worked in the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund. In addition to his scientific work, Markus has exhibited his own computer graphics, as well as written novels, poetry, and translated Spanish poems. Albert Goldbeter is a Belgian theoretical biologist who is professor emeritus in the Faculty of Sciences, Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. Keith Dalziel
Professor Keith Dalziel F.R.S. (24 August 1921 – 7 January 1994) was a British biochemist. Life Dalziel was born in Salford, the youngest of four children of Gilbert and Edith Dalziel. His father, born in Dumfries, Scotland, worked as a mechanic, lorry driver and chauffeur. He was the first of his family to enter higher education. He married Sallie Farnworth in 1945, and the couple had two daughters, born in 1947 and 1952. He died on 7 January 1994. The name Dalziel is of Scottish origin and it is pronounced ɪj'elwith only slightly more stress on the second syllable, essentially like the prefix in -lactic acid. Career Dalziel spent the greater part of his scientific career at the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Oxford. Athel Cornish-Bowden
Athel Cornish-Bowden (born 3 April 1943) is a British biochemist known for his numerous textbooks, particularly those on enzyme kinetics and his work on metabolic control analysis. Education and career Athel Cornish-Bowden worked on pepsin catalysis. This began a life long pursuit of work on enzyme catalysis and in later years work on the control of metabolism. More recently he has also turned his attention to work related to the origin and nature of life. He obtained his D.Phil. at Oxford with Jeremy R. Knowles, and carried out post-doctoral work at Berkeley with Daniel E.
