Jacques Raynal
Jacques Raynal is a French Polynesian politician and former Cabinet Minister who has served in the governments of Gaston Flosse and Édouard Fritch. He is a member of Tapura Huiraatira. Raynal is a doctor. He was appointed as Minister of Health in the coalition cabinet of Oscar Temaru in February 2009. In April 2009 he quit the Tahoera'a Huiraatira party. He was appointed to the cabinet of Édouard Fritch as Minister of Health and Solidarity in January 2017, replacing Patrick Howell. He was reappointed to the Health portfolio following the 2018 French Polynesian legislative election in May 2018. As Health Minister he introduced a Sugary drink tax to counter diabetes. Édouard Fritch
Winfred Édouard Tereori Fritch (born 4 January 1952) is a French Polynesian politician who served as President of French Polynesia from 2014 to 2023. He previously presided over the Assembly of French Polynesia on three occasions: from April 2007 to February 2008, from February 2009 to April 2009 and from May 2013 to September 2014. Until 2015, Fritch was co-president of Tahoera'a Huiraatira, a pro-French political party, before he became president of the newly established Tapura Huiraatira. He became a member of the Assembly of French Polynesia in 1986. He was reelected in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2013. He served as a cabinet minister in French Polynesia several times between 1984 and 2011. A sugary drink tax, soda tax, or sweetened beverage tax (SBT) is a tax or surcharge (food-related fiscal policy) designed to reduce consumption of sweetened beverages by making them more expensive to purchase. 2018 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia on 22 April and 6 May 2018. On 22 April 2018, voters cast their ballots in the first round of the election to the Assembly of French Polynesia. A second round was held on 6 May 2018 for the three political parties that exceeded 12.5 percent of the vote in the first round. The new Tapura Huiraatira party emerged as the largest in the Assembly, winning 38 of the 57 seats in a landslide. Background The Tahoera'a Huiraatira party, an anti-independence party led by Gaston Flosse, previously won 38 of the 57 seats in the Assembly in the 2013 general election. Patrick Howell
Patrick Howell is a French Polynesian civil servant, politician, and former Cabinet Minister. He is a member of Tapura Huiraatira. Howell trained as a dental surgeon and worked at the Teva I Uta medical center in the early 1980s before becoming head of dental hygiene services in French Polynesia. In 1993 he became director of public health. In the 1980s he campaigned against French nuclear testing and for the creation of a health register for test workers as part of the ''Tomite No Te Rai Hau'' ("Blue Skies Committee"). In May 1994 he was appointed Minister for the Environment and Scientific Research in the government of Gaston Flosse. Oscar Temaru
Oscar Manutahi Temaru (born November 1, 1944) is a Tahitian politician. He has been the president of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France, on five occasions: in 2004, from 2005 to 2006, from 2007 to 2008, in 2009, and from 2011 to 2013. He has also been mayor of Faʻaʻā since 1983. Career He first served as the President of French Polynesia (''président de la Polynésie française'') from June 15, 2004 until his Government lost a no-confidence motion on October 8, 2004.
