Jacob Richard Clarke
Jacob Richard Clarke (1822-1893) was a leading bookseller and music publisher in Sydney in the second half of the nineteenth century. By 1875 he had premises at 317 George Street but in 1879 he over-stocked his shop with photographs in anticipation of demand from the opening of the Sydney International Exhibition. By May 1880 lack of sales saw him bankrupted and a second insolvency in 1885 ruined him completely. For a time he was employed as a low-level Government employee and moved his art-repository to Pitt Street near Bridge Street, Sydney. When he died in Woolloomooloo on 12 July 1893, his second wife Emma was forced to sell some of his papers to pay for the funeral. Clarke had five sons and two daughters by his first wife Louisa Hughes. After she died he married Emma Jones (Widow of Captain W S Jones), née Gater, on 10 April 1862. Taunton
Taunton () is the county town of Somerset, England. It is a market town and has a Minster (church), minster church. Its population in 2011 was 64,621. Its thousand-year history includes a 10th-century priory, monastic foundation, owned by the Bishop of Winchester, Bishops of Winchester, which was rebuilt as Taunton Castle by the Normans in the 12th century. Parts of the inner ward house were turned into the Museum of Somerset and Somerset Military Museum. Woolloomooloo
Woolloomooloo ( ) is a harbourside, inner-city eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1.5 kilometres east of the central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is in a low-lying, former docklands area at the head of Woolloomooloo Bay, on Sydney Harbour. The Domain sits to the west, the locality of East Sydney is near the south-west corner of the suburb and the locality of Kings Cross is near the south-east corner. Potts Point is immediately to the east. Woolloomooloo was originally a working-class district of Sydney and has only recently changed with gentrification of the inner city areas of Sydney. Richard Rowe (9 March 1828 – 9 December 1879) was an English author, also active in Australia. Biography Rowe was born at Spring Gardens, Doncaster, then in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, the son of Thomas Rowe, a Wesleyan minister. Nicol Stenhouse
Nicol Drysdale Stenhouse (27 June 1806 – 18 February 1873) was a Scottish-born lawyer, writer and literary patron in colonial Australia. Biography Stenhouse was born in Coldstream, Berwickshire, Scotland and went on to become a lawyer and a great lover of literature. He was clerk to Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet when the latter was practising as an advocate in Edinburgh. He was also a friend of Thomas De Quincey. Other associates in Edinburgh include Professor John Wilson and Professor Patrick Campbell MacDougall. He emigrated to New South Wales, arriving in October 1839, and practised for many years as an attorney and solicitor in Sydney. He was a patron and mentor to many needy and struggling literary men in Sydney. Alfred Stephen
Sir Alfred Stephen (20 August 180215 October 1894) was an Australian judge and Chief Justice of New South Wales. Early life Alfred was born at St Christopher in the West Indies. His father, John Stephen (1771–1833), was related to James Stephen, became a barrister, and was Solicitor-General at St Christopher before his appointment as Solicitor-General of New South Wales in January 1824. John arrived at Sydney on 7 August 1824 and in September 1825 was made an acting judge of the Supreme Court. On 13 March 1826, his appointment as judge was confirmed. He resigned his position at the end of 1832 on account of ill-health and died on 21 December 1833. Alfred was educated at Charterhouse School and Honiton grammar school in Devon. Alfred Barry
Alfred Barry (15 January 18261 April 1910) was the third Anglican Bishop of Sydney, Bishop of Sydney serving 1884–1889. Over the course of his career, Barry served as headmaster of independent schools, Principal (university), Principal of King's College London university and founded Anglican schools such as Shore School. He officiated at the funeral of Charles Darwin in 1882. Catherine Hayes, married name Catherine Bushnell, (1818? – 11 August 1861) was a world-famous Irish soprano of the Victorian era.
