Edward Berger
Edward Berger (born 1970 in Wolfsburg, West Germany) is a German director and screenwriter. Life and work Edward Berger graduated from Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Wolfsburg. He attended the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig from 1990 to 1991 and then transferred to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he finished his studies in directing in 1994. At NYU, he created numerous short films, which were screened at many international film festivals. He gathered his first work experience at the U.S. Independent Production company Good Machine, working, among others, on the films of Ang Lee and Todd Haynes. Additionally, Edward Berger gave lectures and carried out workshops at Columbia University, and at Universität der Künste Berlin and at the HFF Potsdam. Edward Berger has lived in Berlin since 1997. Till Eulenspiegel
Till Eulenspiegel (; nds, Dyl Ulenspegel ) is the protagonist of a German chapbook published in 1515 (a first edition of ca. 1510/12 is preserved fragmentarily) with a possible background in earlier Middle Low German folklore. Eulenspiegel is a native of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg whose picaresque career takes him to many places throughout the Holy Roman Empire. He plays practical jokes on his contemporaries, at every turn exposing vices. His life is set in the first half of the 14th century, and the final chapters of the chapbook describe his death from the plague of 1350. Eulenspiegel's surname translates to "owl-mirror"; and the frontispiece of the 1515 chapbook, as well as his alleged tombstone in Mölln, Schleswig-Holstein, render it as a rebus comprising an owl and a hand mirror. The German submarine ''U-156'' was a Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' built for service during World War II. The keel for this boat was laid on 11 October 1940 at the DeSchiMAG AG Weser yard in Bremen, Germany, as yard number 998. She was commissioned on 4 September 1941 under the command of ''Kapitänleutnant'' Werner Hartenstein ( Knight of the Iron Cross). The city of Plauen, Hartenstein's home city, adopted the submarine within the then popular sponsorship programme (''Patenschaftsprogramm''), organising gifts and holidays for the crew. The U-boat took part in five patrols, which included attacks on shipping in which she sank twenty merchantmen (including the SS Quaker City), damaged another three merchantmen, and damaged the American destroyer .
