Jacob Maris
Jacob Henricus Maris (August 25, 1837 – August 7, 1899) was a Dutch painter, who with his brothers Willem and Matthijs belonged to what has come to be known as the Hague School of painters. He was considered to be the most important and influential Dutch landscape painter of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. His first teacher was painter J.A.B. Stroebel who taught him the art of painting from 1849 to 1852. Jacob Maris's most known works are the series of portraits of the royal House of Orange, he worked on these with his brother Matthijs Maris. He is also known for landscapes such as ''Ship on the Scheveningen beach''. Life He was born in The Hague. Matthijs Maris
Matthias Maris (17 August 1839 – 22 August 1917) was a Dutch painter, etcher and lithographer. He was also known as Matthijs Maris or Thijs. He initially belonged to the Hague School, like his two brothers, Jacob Maris, Jacob and Willem Maris, Willem, but his later works deviated more and more from that school into a unique style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. He was born in The Hague. At the age of twelve, he registered at the Hague Academy of Art, but did not pass the entrance exam. Therefore, he took lessons from Isaac Cornelis Elink Sterk, secretary of the academy. One year later he was admitted and studied there until 1855. Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer ( , ; see below; also known as Jan Vermeer; October 1632 – 15 December 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt. Kunstmuseum Den Haag
The Kunstmuseum Den Haag is an art museum in The Hague in the Netherlands, founded in 1866 as the Museum voor Moderne Kunst. Later, until 1998, it was known as Haags Gemeentemuseum, and until the end of September 2019 as Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. It has a collection of around 165,000 works, over many different forms of art. In particular, the Kunstmuseum is renowned for its large Piet Mondrian, Mondrian collection, the largest in the world. Mondrian's last work, ''Victory Boogie-Woogie'', is on display at the museum. ''Allotments near The Hague'' (also called: ''Vegetable Gardens near The Hague'') is a painting by the Dutch artist Jacob Maris. Painted around 1878 using oil on canvas, it depicts a then still undeveloped part of The Hague near Scheveningen. It measures and is painted in the style of the Hague School. The work is in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Context Apart from time spent studying in Antwerp and a stay in Paris from 1865 to 1871, Jacob Maris lived and worked in The Hague with his brother Matthijs.
