Jacob G. Vail
Jacob Garetson Vail (1827 – October 9, 1884) was an American Union brevet brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to March 13, 1865. Vail had served as colonel of the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry, a regiment which was organized at Camp Morton in Indianapolis in May 1861. After the war, he joined the Republican Party and served as sheriff of Gibson County, Indiana, from April 1866 until February 28, 1868. In military terminology, a brevet ( or ) is a warrant which gives commissioned officers a higher military rank as a reward without necessarily conferring the authority and privileges granted by that rank. The promotion would be noted in the officer's title (for example, "Bvt. Maj. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain" or "Bvt. Col. Arthur MacArthur"). 17th Indiana Infantry Regiment
The 17th Indiana Infantry Regiment, also known as 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry Regiment, was an infantry and mounted infantry regiment that served in the Union Army from 1863 to 1865 during the American Civil War. It served in West Virginia before being transferred to the Western Theater. In that theater, it was known for its membership in the " Lightning Brigade." Gibson County is a county in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 33,011. The county seat is Princeton. History In 1787, the fledgling United States defined the Northwest Territory, which included the area of present-day Indiana.
