Jackson C. Frank (album)
''Jackson C. Frank'' is the debut album by Jackson C. Frank, released in December 1965 by Columbia (EMI). It was the only studio album he released before his death. Background The album was produced in 1965 by Paul Simon in London, and both Al Stewart and Art Garfunkel attended the recording. The album features Frank on guitar and vocals with Simon and Stewart providing an occasional second guitar. Frank was reportedly so nervous that in order to play and sing, he had to have screens around him. The album was recorded in less than three hours in London at CBS Studios. Legacy Upon release, the album failed to chart and sold poorly. After the failure of the album, Frank attempted to track down Simon, who he believed owned the rights to his songs. He went into seclusion and died decades later, never having released another recording. The album has been re-released under three different titles and four different cover arts. Bert Jansch
Herbert Jansch (3 November 1943 – 5 October 2011) was a Scottish folk musician and founding member of the band Pentangle (band), Pentangle. He was born in Glasgow and came to prominence in London in the 1960s as an acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter. He recorded more than 28 albums and toured extensively from the 1960s to the 21st century. Jansch was a leading figure in the 1960s British folk revival, touring folk clubs and recording several solo albums, as well as collaborating with other musicians such as John Renbourn and Anne Briggs. In 1968, he co-founded the band Pentangle, touring and recording with them until their break-up in 1972. He then took a few years' break from music, returning in the late 1970s to work on a series of projects with other musicians. He joined a reformed Pentangle in the early 1980s and remained with them as they evolved through various changes of personnel until 1995. Until his death, Jansch continued to work as a solo artist. "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground" (Roud 4957, sometimes titled "Mole in the Ground" or "Kimbie") is a traditional American folk song. It was most famously recorded by Bascom Lamar Lunsford in 1928 for Brunswick Records in Ashland, Kentucky. Harry Smith included "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground" on his ''Anthology of American Folk Music'' released by Folkways Records in 1952. The notes for Smith's ''Anthology'' state that Lunsford learned this song from Fred Moody, a North Carolina neighbor, in 1901. Song Lunsford said of this song: The title of this mountain banjo song is "I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground." I've known it since 1901 when I heard Fred Moody, then a high school boy, sing it down in Burke County. Bascom Lamar Lunsford (March 21, 1882 – September 4, 1973) was a folklorist, performer of traditional Appalachian music, and lawyer from western North Carolina. He was often known by the nickname "Minstrel of the Appalachians". Biography Bascom Lamar Lunsford was born at Mars Hill, Madison County, North Carolina in 1882, into the world of traditional Appalachian folk music. At an early age, his father, a teacher, gave him a fiddle, and his mother sang religious songs and traditional ballads. Lunsford also learned banjo and began to perform at weddings and square dances. After qualifying as a teacher at Rutherford College, Lunsford taught at schools in Madison County. In 1913, Lunsford qualified in law at Trinity College, later to become Duke University. He began to travel and collect material at the start of the 20th century, often meeting singers on isolated farms.
