Jack Zivic
John A. Zivic (June 23, 1903 – May 22, 1973) was an American boxer who competed in the featherweight class in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. He was a serious contender for the world lightweight championship in 1924, but was defeated by reigning junior lightweight champion Jack Bernstein in an elimination tournament. He had a solid punch and was known for his left hook. Early life He was born to a family of Croatian heritage, on June 23, 1903 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was the second oldest of five boys. At 14, Jack quit school to work as an electrician's helper in a Pittsburgh mill for three dollars a day, an attractive sum in that era. His older brother Peter, and younger brothers Fritzie, and Eddie, were also accomplished boxers. Fritzie took the world welterweight championship in 1940. Willie Harmon, (born April 20, 1899), was an American boxer in the welterweight division. Harmon was a top welterweight contender for a number of years in the mid-1920s. He was ranked as the #6 welterweight in the world for 1925 by '' The Ring'' magazine. Early life and career Harmon was born on April 20, 1899, to Jewish parents in New York's Lower East Side. He defeated Pinky Mitchell, former Junior Welterweight world champion, on August 14, 1925, in a ten round points decision in Milwaukee. A few publications listed the bout as a draw. The event was made memorable by Mitchell returning his purse, claiming he fought too poorly to have earned it. Nate Goldman, fellow Jewish boxer, became a second round knockout victim at Madison Square Garden on New Year's day 1926.
