John Harrison (15 October 1888 – 1970) was a British boxer who was British middleweight champion in 1912. Career Born in Bozeat and raised in Bozeat and Rushden, Harrison was a former Guardsman who first fought at middleweight. His first known fight was in 1907. Harrison beat Harry Mansfield on points at the National Sporting Club, Covent Garden in May 1911. In May 1912 he beat Pat McEnroy to take the British middleweight title vacated by Jim Sullivan and the Lonsdale Belt. He travelled to the United States in August 1912 with Welsh boxer Eddie Morgan, and fought Eddie McGoorty for the World middleweight title at Madison Square Garden; McGoorty knocked Harrison out in the first round to take the title. He also lost to Young Sammy Smith. He returned to the UK and fought Ted Kid Lewis in December 1912, losing by a third-round knockout. John Harrison (12 November 1890 – 3 May 1917) was a professional rugby league footballer who played for Hull FC. He later became a British Army officer, and was the posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross during the First World War, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life Harrison was born in Hull on 12 November 1890. His father was a plater and boilermaker in the Earles Shipyard. After leaving school, Harrison studied at St John's College, York (now York St John University) where he was Rugby club captain and also represented the College at cricket and swimming before becoming a teacher later at Lime Street School in Hull. In York, he caught the attention of the York rugby league club, and played for them five times in 1911–12, scoring three tries. Jack Harrison (18 December 1912 – 4 June 2010) was a Scotland, Scottish educator, military pilot, and prisoner of war during World War II. Harrison was one of the last known survivors of the Stalag Luft III Great Escape. Stalag Luft III was a Luftwaffe run prisoner of war camp in Silesia (modern-day Poland). World War II The Great Escape Harrison was a prisoner at Stalag Luft III during World War II. As an RAF pilot he took part in the planning of Stalag Luft III, "The Great Escape" from Stalag Luft III. Harrison never made it out of the camp because the escape attempt was discovered before he could get in the tunnel. There were 76 prisoners who made the escape in March 1944. Most were recaptured and 50 were executed. Personal Harrison was born on 18 December 1912. On the eve of World War II, Harrison was a Latin teacher at Dornoch Academy in Sutherland. He was educated at The Grammar School at Leeds, before going up to Pembroke College, Oxford where he read economics and management.
