William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey (June 24, 1895 – May 31, 1983), nicknamed Kid Blackie and The Manassa Mauler, was an American professional boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927, and reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. A cultural icon of the 1920s, Dempsey's aggressive fighting style and exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million-dollar gate. He pioneered the live broadcast of sporting events in general, and boxing matches in particular. Thomas Moore (1920 – November 2007) was a British professional wrestler, best known by his ring name Jack Dempsey, who was active in North American and European regional promotions from the 1930s to the 1960s. At the time of his 1966 retirement, he was a quadruple-crown British, European, Commonwealth and World (European version) Welterweight Champion. John Edward Kelly (December 15, 1862 – November 1, 1895) was an Irish-American boxer, better known as Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, who was the first holder of the World Middleweight Championship (1884–1891). He was nicknamed "Nonpareil" because of his reputation of being unbeatable. Biography Dempsey was born on December 15, 1862 in Curran, County Kildare, United Kingdom (now Republic of Ireland). He won the middleweight title on July 30, 1884, by defeating George Fulljames in Great Kills, Staten Island, New York. He held the title for over six years, defending the title against two fighters during the reign. John James Francis Dempsey (25 September 1919 – 9 September 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Dempsey made four appearances in the 1941 VFL season but didn't play a single game over the next two years, as he was on active service with the Australian Army. Jack Dempsey (1878 – 10 December 1913) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. His championship career at senior level with the Dublin county team lasted six seasons from 1902 until 1907. In spite of being a native of Wexford, Dempsey enjoyed his greatest club success as a member of the Bray Emmets club. He won his sole county senior championship medal in 1901. Dempsey made his debut on the inter-county scene as a member of the Dublin senior football team during the 1902 championship. Over the course of the next six seasons, he won three All-Ireland medals, beginning with a lone victory as captain of the team in 1902, followed by back-to-back championships in 1906 and 1907. Demspey also won four Leinster medals. Dempsey died from tuberculosis on 10 December 1913.
