Jack Andrews (New Zealand Politician)
John William Andrews (8 May 1892 – 27 June 1983) was a New Zealand businessman and politician. He was Mayor of Lower Hutt from 1933 to 1947. Biography Andrews was born in Masterton in 1892. He was educated at Masterton District High School before enlisting in the army during World War I. He was a captain in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and was wounded in action during the Battle of Messines. After the war he founded and operated a joinery manufacturing business in Masterton and was elected to the Masterton Borough Council. He stood in the in the electorate for the Liberal Party, but was defeated by the incumbent, Reform's George Sykes. In 1927 he moved to Lower Hutt and opened a joinery factory. As the company director of the factory he was elected president of the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Of Lower Hutt
The city of Lower Hutt, New Zealand, was first proclaimed a borough on 1 February 1891. Prior to this it had been part of Hutt County, initially as a Roads Board and from 1881 as a Town Board. Since 2019, the mayor has been Campbell Barry. History The Hutt County Council was established in 1877, covering the region from Wellington's south coast up to Waikanae, excluding Wellington City. The county council was headed by a chairman rather than a mayor. As the region grew, urban parts of the Hutt County became autonomous boroughs with Lower Hutt becoming its own borough in 1891 with a borough council headed by a mayor to be directly elected by ratepayers. ''The Hutt News'' is a community newspaper circulated in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It is one of the earliest and longest running community newspapers in the country. History The paper was established in 1927 by Walter Harold Smith, a retired farmer. Smith felt Lower Hutt should have its own paper as its population was approaching that of neighbouring Petone (which had managed to sustain a newspaper since 1887). It was first issued in April 1927 via the patronage of the local Businessmen's Association. Prior to this the residents had access to ''The Wellington Independent'', '' New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator'' and ''Petone Chronicle''. In 1928, Smith was joined by brothers James and William Kerr of the ''Petone Chronicle''. They formed the Hutt Printing and Publishing Company to produce the paper. Naenae (, occasionally spelled NaeNae) is a suburb of Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It lies on the eastern edge of the floodplain of the Hutt River, four kilometres from the Lower Hutt Central business district. A small tributary of the Hutt, the Waiwhetū Stream, flows through the suburb. Naenae lies 19.7 km from Wellington Central. Epuni is a suburb of Lower Hutt, situated in the Wellington region of New Zealand. The suburb lies around one kilometre east of the Lower Hutt CBD. The suburb takes its name from the Te Āti Awa chief Honiana Te Puni. In 2018 HNZ, which in October 2019 became part of Kaingaora Ora Homes and Communities, announced that it was to build 153 homes on long-vacant land in Epuni where earlier HNZ houses had been demolished. Walter Nash
Sir Walter Nash (12 February 1882 – 4 June 1968) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 27th prime minister of New Zealand in the Second Labour Government from 1957 to 1960. He is noted for his long period of political service, having been associated with the New Zealand Labour Party since its creation. Nash was born in the West Midlands, England, and is the most recent New Zealand prime minister to be born outside the country. He arrived in New Zealand in 1909, soon joined the original Labour Party, and became a member of the party's executive in 1919. Hutt Recreation Ground
The Hutt Recreation Ground is a football, cricket and rugby union ground in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. The grounds are owned by the Hutt City Council and managed for them by Downer. History In 1905 the area was first used for recreation when the lot was used by the Hutt Amateur Athletic Club. It was subsequently purchased by the city council and in 1908 the premises were upgraded. During World War I the ground was used by the council to grow potatoes to assist with food production for the war effort. The first grandstand at the ground was constructed in 1933 as part of a public works scheme to provide employment relief during the Great Depression.
