JDS ''Takanami'' (DD-110) was the fifth ship of ''Ayanami''-class destroyers. Construction and career ''Takanami'' was laid down at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Tamano Shipyard on 8 November 1958 and launched on 8 August 1959. She was commissioned on 30 January 1960. On 31 August 1960, he was transferred to the 11th Escort Corps, which was newly formed under the Kure District Force, together with JDS Ōnami. On 1 February 1961, the 11th Escort Corps was reorganized under the Self-Defense Fleet and under the 2nd Escort Group. Hedgehog (weapon)
The Hedgehog (also known as an ''Anti-Submarine Projector'') was a forward-throwing anti-submarine weapon that was used primarily during the Second World War. The device, which was developed by the Royal Navy, fired up to 24 spigot mortars ahead of a ship when attacking a U-boat. It was deployed on convoy escort warships such as destroyers and corvettes to supplement the depth charges. As the mortar projectiles employed contact fuzes rather than time or barometric (depth) fuzes, detonation occurred directly against a hard surface such as the hull of a submarine making it more deadly than depth charges, which relied on damage caused by hydrostatic shockwaves. Variable Depth Sonar
A towed array sonar is a system of hydrophones towed behind a submarine or a surface ship on a cable. Trailing the hydrophones behind the vessel, on a cable that can be kilometers long, keeps the array's sensors away from the ship's own noise sources, greatly improving its signal-to-noise ratio, and hence the effectiveness of detecting and tracking faint contacts, such as quiet, low noise-emitting submarine threats, or seismic signals.
