J. Linsley Gressitt
Judson Linsley Gressitt (16 June 1914 – 26 April 1982) was an American entomologist and naturalist who worked in Japan and China. He worked mainly on beetle diversity in Southeast Asia and in applied areas, particularly medical entomology, and was the founder of the journal ''Pacific Insects'' (which became the ''International Journal of Entomology'') and the Wau Ecology Institute in Papua New Guinea. Apart from insects, he collected specimens in numerous taxa and several have been named after him. Life Gressitt was born in Tokyo, Japan, where his parents were Baptist missionaries. The family became refugees after the earthquake of 1923 and they moved to Oakland, California in 1925 where he recovered from pneumonia and typhoid. Through his cousin E. Gorton Linsley, he became interested in insects and the outdoors as Boy Scouts where they were influenced by Brighton C. Cain. Cerambycidae
The longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae), also known as long-horned or longicorns (whose larvae are often referred to as roundheaded borers), are a large family of beetles, with over 35,000 species described. Most species are characterized by antennae as long as or longer than the beetle's body. A few species have short antennae (e.g., '' Neandra brunnea''), making them difficult to distinguish from related families such as Chrysomelidae. "Cerambycidae" comes from a Greek mythological figure: after an argument with nymphs, the shepherd Cerambus is transformed into a large beetle with horns. CAAC Flight 3303
CAAC Flight 3303 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from the former Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to Guilin Qifengling Airport, China. It was serviced by a Hawker Siddeley Trident, registration B-266, that crashed into a mountain on 26 April 1982, killing all 112 people aboard. Aircraft and crew The crashed aircraft was a Hawker Siddeley Trident 2E that first flew in 1975. The aircraft was owned by the Air Force but was operated by CAAC Airlines, Guangzhou division (now China Southern Airlines). Gressitt Glacier
Rennick Glacier () is a broad glacier, nearly long, which is one of the largest in Antarctica. It rises on the polar plateau westward of Mesa Range and is wide, narrowing to near the coast. It takes its name from Rennick Bay where the glacier reaches the sea. Early exploration The seaward part of the glacier was photographed by United States Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47. The upper reaches of the Rennick Glacier were discovered and explored by the U.S. Victoria Land Traverse (VLT) in February 1960, and the first ascent made of Welcome Mountain by John Weihaupt, Alfred Stuart, Claude Lorius and Arnold Heine of the VLT party. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides
''Metasequoia glyptostroboides'', the dawn redwood, is a fast-growing, endangered deciduous pinophyta, conifer. It is the sole living species of the genus ''Metasequoia'', one of three genera in the subfamily Sequoioideae of the family (botany), family Cupressaceae. It now survives in the wild only in wet lower slopes and Montane ecosystems, montane river and stream valleys in the border region of Hubei and Hunan provinces and Chongqing municipality in south-central China, notably in Lichuan, Hubei, Lichuan county in Hubei. Cassidinae
The Cassidinae (tortoise and leaf-mining beetles) are a subfamily of the leaf beetles, or Chrysomelidae. The antennae arise close to each other and some members have the pronotal and elytral edges extended to the side and covering the legs so as to give them the common name of tortoise beetles. Some members, such as in the tribe Hispini, are notable for the spiny outgrowths to the pronotum and elytra. Description The "cassidoids" have a rounded outline with the edges of the pronotum and elytra expanded, spreading out to cover the legs and head. They are often colourful and metallic, with ornate sculpturing; a few species have the ability to change colour due to water movements within the translucent cuticle.
