J. J. Barnes
James Jay Barnes (November 30, 1943 – December 10, 2022) was an American R&B singer and songwriter. Biography He recorded several singles, starting in 1960. His early releases including "Just One More Time" and "Please Let Me In", on the record labels Mickay and Ric-Tic, had relatively little success, but were subsequently picked up as Northern soul favorites in the UK. He was later signed to Motown Records, where he contributed as a songwriter but did not have any recordings released as a singer. Some of his Motown material has subsequently been released on the ''A Cellarful of Motown!'' compilation album series. Barnes was a member of the Holidays, a trio which also included Edwin Starr and Steve Mancha. They had a #7 R&B hit in June 1966 with "I'll Love You Forever" (#43 in Canada). Edwin Starr
Charles Edwin Hatcher (January 21, 1942 – April 2, 2003), known by his stage name Edwin Starr, was an American singer and songwriter. He is best remembered for his Norman Whitfield-produced Motown singles of the 1970s, most notably the number-one hit " War". Born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he later lived in Detroit while singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was backed by the band that became known as " Black Merda". Hawkins and Veasey of the group played on most of his early hits on the Ric Tic Label. Starr's songs " Twenty-Five Miles" and "Stop the War Now" were also major successes, in 1969 and 1971 respectively. Ian Levine
Ian Geoffrey Levine (born 22 June 1953) is a British songwriter, producer, DJ, and prominent Doctor Who fan. A populariser of Northern soul music in the UK, and a developer of the style of hi-NRG, he has co-written and co-produced records with sales totalling over 40 million. Early and personal life Levine was born into a Jewish family; his parents owned and ran the "Lemon Tree" complex in Blackpool, including its casino and nightclub. Levine is openly gay. He suffered a major stroke in July 2014, leaving him with severely limited movement on the left side of his body. Levine has also survived paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer, nasal cancer, bladder cancer, sepsis and sarcoidosis. Levine spent decades tracking down 3,000 of his relatives. Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)
"Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" is a song and single by American soul singer Frank Wilson first pressed in 1965 on the Motown subsidiary label Soul. It is Wilson's only Motown single and is a prized item among collectors. Record history Approximately 250 demo 45s of the song were pressed in 1965 and scheduled for release on 23 December 1965. Owing to a combination of Wilson deciding that he would rather focus on producing and Motown's Berry Gordy's lukewarm reception of the vocals and wish to prevent his producers from having a successful recording career, the demos were destroyed. At least two, and maybe as many as five, copies survived, one of which fetched £25,742 in April 2009. One is rumoured to be owned by Berry Gordy. Frank Wilson (musician)
Frank Edward Wilson (December 5, 1940 – September 27, 2012) was an American songwriter, singer, and record producer for Motown Records. Early life and education Wilson was born on December 5, 1940, in Houston, Texas, to James Wilson and Samanther Gibbs. Wilson attended Southern University in Baton Rouge but only for one year; he had participated in a civil rights protest and lost his scholarship in his sophomore year. While still in his teens, he moved to Los Angeles, California. Career In 1963, Berry Gordy asked the producers Hal Davis and Marc Gordon to set up an office of Motown in Los Angeles. Wilson accepted an offer to join the team.
