J. Grant Brittain
J. Grant Brittain (born 1955) is a photographer internationally recognized for his work documenting skateboarding. Brittain has been shooting skateboarding for over 30 years. Skateboarding In his early 20s, Brittain got a job at the Del Mar Skate Ranch, starting work on the second day the skatepark was open. Photography career Brittain began photographing skateboarding in 1979 at Del Mar. Brittain photographed many professional skateboarders skating at Del Mar including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, and many others. Brittain became one of the first professional skate photographers to make a living photographing skateboarding. Del Mar Skate Ranch
The Del Mar Skate Ranch, also known as the DMSR, was an American skatepark in Del Mar, California, which opened August 1978 and was demolished July 1987. History DMSR was designed by IPS (Inouye’s Pool Service) staffers Tom Inouye, Chris Strople and Curtis Hesselgrave; however, the actual construction of the skatepark was farmed out to the lowest bidding contractor. The park was built in 1978 and was the gathering point for many influential skaters. Del Mar featured a handful of different obstacles including the "Keyhole pool" where many tricks were done for the first time. A skatepark, or skate park, is a purpose-built recreational environment made for skateboarding, BMX, scootering, wheelchairs, and aggressive inline skating. A skatepark may contain half-pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, stairsets, quarter pipes, ledges, spine transfers, pyramids, banked ramps, full pipes, pools, bowls, snake runs, and any number of other objects. Tony Hawk
Anthony Frank Hawk (born May 12, 1968), nicknamed Birdman, is an American professional skateboarder, entrepreneur, and the owner of the skateboard company Birdhouse. A pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding, Hawk completed the first documented " 900" skateboarding trick in 1999. He also licensed a skateboarding video game series named after him published by Activision that same year. He retired from competing professionally in 2003 and is regarded as one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. Steve Caballero
Steve Caballero (born November 8, 1964) is an American professional skateboarder. He is known for the difficult tricks and air variations he invented for vertical skating and for setting the long-standing record for the highest air achieved on a halfpipe. In 1999, ''Thrasher Magazine'' named Caballero the "Skater of the Century". Career Caballero was born with scoliosis, a condition which causes a curvature of the spine, although he has stated that the condition "really hasn't affected me too much." He began skating in 1976 at the age of 12 and started his career at age 14. His first sponsor was Campbell Skate Park. In 1979, Caballero entered a national skate contest in Escondido. Mike McGill
Mike McGill (born 1964) is an American skateboarder who is best known for inventing the trick entitled the " McTwist", an inverted 540 degree mute grab aerial. Professional skateboarding McTwist A McTwist is a transitional trick that was invented by McGill and consists of a front flip combined with a 540-degree rotation. McGill first performed the manoeuvre on a wooden half-pipe in Rättvik, Sweden in 1984 and then at the Del Mar Skate Ranch's concrete bowl, called The Keyhole, when he returned to the United States (U.S.).
