J. Fred Edwards
James Frederick Edwards (April 8, 1902 – February 9, 1978) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member who represented Perth in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1945 to 1967. Background Edwards was born in Palmerston, Ontario in 1902. He operated the J. Fred Edwards Rexall Drug Store in Palmerston from at least 1938. Edwards was married to Thora McCartney (1897–1977) and they are buried at Palmerston Cemetery in Palmerston, Ontario. Politics Edwards was elected in the general election in 1945, Edwards was re-elected in the general elections in 1948, 1951, 1955, 1959, and 1963. He served as a backbench supporter in the governments of George Drew, Thomas Laird Kennedy, Leslie Frost and John Robarts. Backbench
In Westminster and other parliamentary systems, a backbencher is a member of parliament (MP) or a legislator who occupies no governmental office and is not a frontbench spokesperson in the Opposition, being instead simply a member of the "rank and file". The term dates from 1855. The term derives from the fact that they sit physically behind the frontbench in the House of Commons. A backbencher may be a new parliamentary member yet to receive high office, a senior figure dropped from government, someone who for whatever reason is not chosen to sit in the government or an opposition spokesperson (such as a shadow cabinet if one exists), or someone who prefers to be a background influence, not in the spotlight. The Ontario Liberal Party (OLP; french: Parti libéral de l'Ontario, PLO) is a political party in the province of Ontario, Canada. The party has been led by interim leader John Fraser since August 2022. John Parmenter Robarts (January 11, 1917 – October 18, 1982) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 17th premier of Ontario from 1961 to 1971. Leslie Miscampbell Frost (September 20, 1895 – May 4, 1973) was a politician in Ontario, Canada, who served as the province's 16th premier from May 4, 1949, to November 8, 1961. Due to his lengthy tenure, he gained the nickname "Old Man Ontario"; he was also known as "the Silver Fox". Early years Born in Orillia, Ontario, he was the son of William Sword Frost and Margaret Jane Barker. Thomas Laird Kennedy
Thomas Laird Kennedy (August 15, 1878 – February 13, 1959) was a politician in Ontario, Canada, and served briefly as the 15th premier of Ontario, from 1948 to 1949. He was first elected as the Conservative member for Peel in the 1919 provincial election. He had been a longtime resident of Streetsville (now part of Mississauga), Ontario, where he was master of River Park Masonic Lodge in 1908 and 1909. Kennedy was first appointed Minister of Agriculture in 1930 by Premier Howard Ferguson and continued in the position under Premier George S. Henry until the Conservative government's defeat in the 1934 provincial election. Kennedy was a casualty in the election losing his seat to the landslide that elected the government of Liberal Mitchell Hepburn.
