Iwona Maria Blazwick OBE (born 14 October 1955) is a British art critic and lecturer, and has been Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London since 2001. She discovered Damien Hirst and staged his first solo show at a public London art gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1992. She supports the careers of young artists. Blazwick was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to art in 2008. She is married to Richard Noble, the Canadian philosopher and fine art lecturer at Goldsmiths University of London. Early life Blazwick was brought up in Blackheath, South East London. Iwona Chmielewska (born 1960) is a Polish author and illustrator, who publishes mainly for children but also for adults. Many of her works are published in South Korea where she has gained considerable popularity. She lives and works in Toruń in northern Poland where she teaches in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. Biography Born on 5 February 1960 in Pabianice, Chmielewska studied graphic design at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She first published in South Korea in 1990 where she has now published over 20 books, many of which have been translated into other languages. Iwona Teresa Stroynowski née Fleszar (born 1950) is a Polish-born American immunologist who is Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. She discovered the process of gene expression control called attenuation early in her career, the first example of a riboswitch mechanism. Iwona Buczkowska (born 1953) is a Polish-born French architect and urban planner. She studied at the Polytechnic School in Gdańsk and the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris. Buczkowska received the Gold Medal and Special Prize at the Fifth World Biennale of Architecture at Sofia in 1989 for her project at Le Blanc-Mesnil and the silver medal and the Prix Delarue in 1994 from the Académie d'architecture for her collected work.
