Iwcs A Doyle
Iwcs a Doyle were a popular Welsh-language two-piece band. Iwan "Iwcs" Roberts and John Doyle formed the duo Iwcs a Doyle in 1995. They rose to fame following their success with the song “Cerrig yr Afon” in the annually held “Cân i Gymru” (Song for Wales) competition in 1996. The pair recorded an album entitled “Edrychiad Cynta’”, which was released in early 1997. The album was an overwhelming success on the Welsh music scene, spending over a year at number one in the Radio Cymru charts. Described as "one of the most promising duos ever", Iwcs a Doyle travelled and gigged extensively throughout 1997 and 1998, playing in theatres and pubs across the length and breadth of Wales. Their musical style is that of an acoustic folk/pop, with strong memorable guitar pieces by Doyle, which merged into a funk style on occasions. Welsh-language
Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic language of the Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). Historically, it has also been known in English as "British", "Cambrian", "Cambric" and "Cymric". The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales. Both the Welsh and English languages are ''de jure'' official languages of the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd. According to the 2021 census, the Welsh-speaking population of Wales aged three or older was 17.8% (538,300 people) and nearly three quarters of the population in Wales said they had no Welsh language skills. Other estimates suggest that 29.7% (899,500) of people aged three or older in Wales could speak Welsh in June 2022. Iwan "Iwcs" Roberts
Iwan "Iwcs" Roberts (born 1967) is a Welsh actor, lyricist, singer, novelist, script writer and film producer of ''Dal y Mellt''. He has worked on various films, including the BAFTA-winning productions ''Eldra'' and ''Y Lleill'' (The Others), and is well known for his portrayal of character Kevin Powell in the Welsh soap opera '' Pobol y Cwm''. He has also had a successful career as a singer-songwriter, both as part of the duo Iwcs a Doyle and as a solo artist. Early life Iwan Roberts was raised in the village of Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd. A creative talent and an avid performer from an early age, he gained his first stage experience while still a pupil at Ysgol Bro Hedd Wyn primary school. Cân I Gymru
''Cân i Gymru'' (English: ''A Song for Wales'', ) is a Welsh television show broadcast on S4C annually. It was first introduced in 1969 when BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Cymru wanted to enter the Eurovision Song Contest. It has taken place every year since, except in 1973. The winner of the contest represents Wales at the annual Pan Celtic Festival held in Ireland and is also awarded a cash prize (which varies from year to year). History ''Cân i Gymru'' was presented to Wales under the name ''Cân Disc a Dawn'', a competition based around the Welsh language pop music show ' (as seen on Victor Lewis Smith's ''TV Offal''), for the first time in 1969. Radio Cymru
BBC Radio Cymru is a Welsh language radio network owned and operated by BBC Cymru Wales, a division of the BBC. It broadcasts on two stations across Wales on FM, DAB, digital TV and online. The main network broadcasts for hours a day from 5:30am to midnight with overnight programming simulcast from the BBC World Service after closedown. A second station, Radio Cymru 2, providing separate music and sports programming, broadcasts on digital and online platforms. Sain (record Label)
Sain (Welsh for ''Audio'', ), in full – ''Sain (Recordiau) Cyf.'' (Audio (Records) Ltd) is a Welsh record label, which took part in the Welsh folk revival. History Sain was founded in Cardiff in 1969 by singers and songwriters Dafydd Iwan and Huw Jones, and businessman Brian Morgan Edwards, as a home for Welsh-language rock and folk music, which was otherwise finding it difficult to 'break through' in the UK market. Sain is regarded as being the first Welsh record company to be self-sufficient in terms of independence from other British companies, and laid the foundation for subsequent Welsh labels. The company released its first single in October 1969, Huw Jones' "Dŵr" (Welsh for ''Water''), a song about the drowning of the Tryweryn Valley, in the north of Wales, to form Llyn Celyn reservoir.
