Ivano-Frankivsk
Ivano-Frankivsk (, ), formerly Stanyslaviv, Stanislav and Stanisławów, is a city in western Ukraine. It serves as the administrative centre of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast as well as Ivano-Frankivsk Raion within the oblast. Ivano-Frankivsk also hosts the administration of the Ivano-Frankivsk urban hromada. Its population is 227,827 (2024 estimate). Built in the mid-17th century as a fortress of the Polish Potocki family, Stanisławów was annexed to the Habsburg monarchy, Habsburg Empire during the First Partition of Poland in 1772, after which it became the property of the State within the Austrian Empire. Throughout this time, it was within the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. The fortress was slowly transformed into one of the most prominent cities at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Ivano-Frankivsk Raion () is a raion (district) of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. It was created in July 2020 as part of the reform of administrative divisions of Ukraine. The center of the raion is the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. Five abolished raions, Bohorodchany, Halych, Rohatyn, Tlumach, and Tysmenytsia Raions, as well as Ivano-Frankivsk and Burshtyn Municipalities, were merged into Ivano-Frankivsk Raion. Market Square in Ivano-Frankivsk, also known as Ploshcha Rynok (), is historically the central square of the city. It is the oldest square and traces its history to the city's establishment. The main feature of the square is the former city hall, Ratusha, which today serves as the building of the Museum of regional studies. Composition The square is rectangular in shape with one major street running through its western side, Halych Street. Halych Street is one of the major transportation arteries of the city and is part of the (National Route 9). The Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, also known as Austrian Galicia or colloquially Austrian Poland, was a constituent possession of the Habsburg monarchy in the historical region of Galicia (Eastern Europe), Galicia in Eastern Europe. Church of Virgin Mary is a collegiate parish church and the oldest building of Ivano-Frankivsk city. The church building ensemble includes the main building and a belfry that was rebuilt after the fall of Soviet Union. History The exact date of the church's founding is not known. It is known that when the fortress of Stanislawow was erected together with it, Andrzej Potocki started to build out wood the Catholic parish church as well.
