Ivan Turchin
Ivan Vasilyevich Turchaninov (); December 24, 1822 – June 18, 1901) better known by his Anglicised name of John Basil Turchin, was a member of the Russian nobility, a military-intelligence Colonel in the Imperial Russian Army, and a personal staff-officer to the future Emperor Alexander II of Russia. He immigrated to the United States in 1856, and after working as a farmer in Long Island and as a railroad official in Chicago, he voluntarily returned to military service in 1861, becoming a Union Army Colonel during the American Civil War. Turchin was court-martialed for allowing the 19th Illinois Infantry Regiment to unleash total war in the 1862 "Sack of Athens" in retaliation for Alabama civilians firing upon his troops during their earlier retreat from the town. The court-martial found him guilty of all charges and sentenced him to a dishonorable discharge. Don Host Oblast
Don Host Oblast was a province (''oblast'') of the Russian Empire which consisted of the territory of the Don Cossacks, coinciding approximately with present-day Rostov Oblast in Russia. Its administrative center was Cherkassk, and later Novocherkassk. It comprised the areas where the Don Cossack Host settled in the Russian Empire. From 1786, the territory was officially named Don Host Land (), renamed Don Host Oblast in 1870. During 1914, the oblast, with an area of 164,000 km², had about 3.9 million inhabitants. Dishonorable Discharge
A military discharge is given when a member of the armed forces is released from their obligation to serve. Each country's military has different types of discharge. They are generally based on whether the persons completed their training and then fully and satisfactorily completed their term of service. 19th Illinois Infantry Regiment
The 19th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Three companies formerly with Col. Elmer Ellsworth's Zouave Cadets wore a zouave uniform consisting of a dark blue zouave jacket with red trimmings, red pants, leather gaiters, a sky blue shirt, red sash, and a red French styled kepi with a dark blue band. The jacket cuffs were trimmed in yellow-orange and red. Brass buttons went down both fronts of the jacket. They were organized into four separate companies on May 4, 1861, in Chicago. A court-martial (plural ''courts-martial'' or ''courts martial'', as "martial" is a postpositive adjective) is a military court or a trial conducted in such a court. A court-martial is empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law, and, if the defendant is found guilty, to decide upon punishment.
