Ivan Gomes
Ivan Simão da Cunha Gomes (December 25, 1939 - March 2, 1990) was a Brazilian vale tudo fighter and professional wrestler. Early life Born in Fazenda das Lajes in Campina Grande, Gomes was expected to become a cowboy like his father, but he started a career in martial arts after meeting coach Tatá. Along with his brothers José and Jaildo, Ivan trained in boxing and a few notions of "jiu-jitsu" (a name for judo in Brazil at the time). He trained formally in the latter art under Agatangelo Braga and his brother-in-law Osmar "Builson" Mouzinho de Oliveira, trainees of judoka Takeo Yano, and also learned under grappler José María Freire, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert from the George Gracie lineage. Gomes, who was a black belt under Braga at 21, also polished further his orthodox judo skills with Hayashi Kawamura in Recife and Masayoshi "Massaioshi" Saito in Belém do Pará. Campina Grande
Campina Grande is the second most populous Brazilian city in the State of Paraíba after João Pessoa, the capital. Professional Wrestling
Professional wrestling is a form of theater that revolves around staged wrestling matches. The mock combat is performed in a ring similar to the kind used in boxing, and the dramatic aspects of pro wrestling may be performed both in the ring or—as in televised wrestling shows—in backstage areas of the venue, in similar form to reality television. Professional wrestling as a form of theater evolved out of the widespread practice of match fixing among wrestlers in the early 20th century. Rather than sanction the wrestlers for their deceit as was done with boxers, the public instead came to see professional wrestling as a performance art rather than a sport. Euclides Pereira
Euclides Pereira (born 7 May 1941) is a former Vale Tudo fighter and current Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach. Biography Pereira was born in northeastern Brazil. His family moved to the city of Natal when he was a child, and he attended Salesian College to become a priest. He ended leaving the college for working in a hotel, and he would start training in martial arts, soon become a student under José Jurandir Moura, who was also a judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu certified teacher under George Gracie and Takeo Yano. He also trained in karate, capoeira and boxing, and had his debut in the Vale Tudo circuit at 17. He joined the luta livre camp and became a legend in the vale tudo fights, getting the nickname of "O Diabo Louro" ("The Blond Devil") for his aggressiveness and charisma. Valdemar Santana
Valdemar Santana (born 28 October 1929 - died 29 August 1984), sometimes known as Adema Santa, was a Brazilian martial artist who trained in Capoeira under Mestre Bimba and in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Hélio Gracie. He was also trained in Luta Livre and boxing. Biography He is famous for fighting his former master Hélio Gracie in 1955. Valdemar fought for the original Gracie Academy for many years but had a falling out with Hélio. Gracie and Santana decided to settle their differences in a Vale Tudo (no holds barred) match. After more than three hours and forty minutes of combat, Santana knocked out Gracie with a soccer kick to the head. Carlos Gracie
Carlos Gracie (September 14, 1902October 7, 1994) was a Brazilian martial artist who is credited with being one of the primary developers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Along with his younger brother Hélio Gracie and fellow students Luis França and Oswaldo Fadda, he helped develop Brazilian jiu-jitsu based on the teachings of famed Japanese ''judōka,'' Mitsuyo Maeda in Kano Jujitsu (Judo) and is widely considered to be the martial-arts patriarch of the Gracie family. Antonius Johannes Geesink (6 April 1934 – 27 August 2010) was a Dutch 10th dan judoka. He was the first non-Japanese judoka to win gold at the World Judo Championship, a feat he accomplished in 1961 and 1965. He was also an Olympic Champion, having won gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Japan, and won a record 21 European Judo Championships during his career. Kata Guruma
is one of the traditional forty throws of judo as developed by Kano Jigoro. Kata guruma belongs to the third group of the traditional throwing list in the ''Gokyo no waza'' of the Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. Because the technique is not a sweep nor a trip and requires '' tori'' to pull ''uke'' into a carry, it is categorized as a hand throwing technique (''tewaza''). Description In ''The Essence of Judo'', Kyuzo Mifune demonstrates three variations of kata guruma. In the second variation, Mifune steps behind ''uke'', and in the third he steps behind ''uke'' and grabs ''uke''s left leg instead.
