Ivan Georgievich Petrovsky
Ivan Georgiyevich Petrovsky (; 18 January 1901 – 15 January 1973) was a Soviet mathematician working mainly in the field of partial differential equations. He greatly contributed to the solution of Hilbert's 19th and 16th problems, and discovered what are now called Petrovsky lacunas. He also worked on the theories of boundary value problems, probability, and on the topology of algebraic curves and surfaces. Biography Petrovsky was a student of Dmitri Egorov. Among his students were Olga Ladyzhenskaya, Evgenii Landis, Olga Oleinik and Sergei Godunov. Petrovsky taught at Steklov Institute of Mathematics. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union since 1946 and was awarded Hero of Socialist Labour in 1969. He was the president of Moscow State University (1951–1973) and the head of the International Congress of Mathematicians (Moscow, 1966). Sevsk () is a town and the administrative center of Sevsky District in Bryansk Oblast, Russia, located on the (Dnieper's basin), from Bryansk, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History Sevsk is one of the oldest cities in the Bryansk region. Along with Novgorod-Seversky, Putivlem and Rylsk, it was one of the cities of the historical Severshchina. ''Matematicheskii Sbornik'' (, abbreviated ''Mat. Sb.'') is a peer reviewed Russian mathematical journal founded by the Moscow Mathematical Society in 1866. It is the oldest successful Russian mathematical journal. The English translation is ''Sbornik: Mathematics''. Novodevichy Cemetery
Novodevichy Cemetery () is a cemetery in Moscow. It lies next to the southern wall of the 16th-century Novodevichy Convent, which is the city's third most popular tourist site. History The cemetery was designed by Ivan Mashkov and inaugurated in 1898. Its importance dates from the 1930s, when the necropolises of the medieval Muscovite monasteries (Simonov Monastery, Simonov, Danilov Monastery, Danilov, Donskoy Monastery, Donskoy) were scheduled for demolition. Only the Donskoy survived the Joseph Stalin era relatively intact. The remains of many famous Russians buried in other abbeys, such as Nikolai Gogol and Sergey Aksakov, were disinterred and reburied at the Novodevichy.
