Italy has been represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 50 times since making its debut as one of only seven countries to compete at the first contest in , which took inspiration from the Sanremo Music Festival. The Italian participating broadcaster in the contest is (RAI). It competed at the contest without interruption until , discontinuing its participation on a number of occasions during the 1980s and 1990s. After a 13-year absence starting in , the country returned to the contest in . Italy has won the contest three times, along with an additional 16 top-five finishes. Waterloo (song)
"Waterloo" is a song recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA, with music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics written by Stig Anderson, Stikkan Anderson. It is first single of the group's second Waterloo (album), album of the same name, and their first under the Atlantic Records, Atlantic label in the United States. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. The title and lyrics reference the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, and use it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship. Jalisse () is an Italian musical duo consisting of spouses Alessandra Drusian (born 18 May 1969) and Fabio Ricci (born 5 September 1965). They won the "Big" category of the Sanremo Music Festival 1997 with the song " Fiumi di parole" and took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, where they ranked 4th. Career Beginnings The two met for the first time in 1990 in the studio of a record company. Drusian in that period competed with numerous victories in musical competitions in Veneto and Friuli–Venezia Giulia; Ricci was the singer and keyboardist of a group called Vox Populi, with whom he had released a maxi-single entitled "I'm So Bad" and presented himself as a songwriter to the record companies. "Fiumi di parole" (literally "Rivers of words") is a song recorded by Italian duo Jalisse –Alessandra Drusian and Fabio Ricci–, with music composed by Ricci and Italian lyrics written by Drusian and Carmen Di Domenico. The song won the Sanremo Music Festival 1997 and in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 held in Dublin.
