Italo Gardoni
Italo Gardoni (12 March 1821 – 26 March 1882) was a leading operatic tenor, tenore di grazia singer from Italy who enjoyed a major international career during the middle decades of the 19th century. Along with Giovanni Mario, Gaetano Fraschini, Enrico Tamberlik and Antonio Giuglini, he was one of the most celebrated Italian tenors of his era. His voice was not large but it was exceptionally pure toned and sweet, lacking any disruptive vibrato. He sang legato passages with impressive smoothness but he could also dispatch florid music with flair and considerable agility. Career Born in Parma, Gardoni studied with Antonio De Cesari (1797–1853). I Puritani
' (''The Puritans'') is an 1835 opera by Vincenzo Bellini. It was originally written in two acts and changed to three acts before the premiere on the advice of Gioachino Rossini, with whom the young composer had become friends. The music was set to a libretto by Count Carlo Pepoli, an Italian émigré poet whom Bellini had met at a salon run by the exile Princess Belgiojoso, which became a meeting place for many Italian revolutionaries. The opera is based on ''Têtes Rondes et Cavaliers'' (''Roundheads and Cavaliers''), a historical play written by Jacques-François Ancelot and Joseph Xavier Saintine and set in the English Civil War. Except for its title, the opera is not in any way based on Walter Scott's 1816 novel '' Old Mortality'' (translated into Italian in 1825 as ''I Puritani di Scozia''), despite some claims to the contrary. ''La sonnambula'' (; ''The Sleepwalker'') is an opera semiseria in two acts, with music in the ''bel canto'' tradition by Vincenzo Bellini set to an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on a scenario for a ''ballet-pantomime'' written by Eugène Scribe and choreographed by Jean-Pierre Aumer called ''La somnambule, ou L'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur''. The ballet had premiered in Paris in September 1827 at the height of a fashion for stage works incorporating somnambulism. The role of Amina was originally written for the soprano sfogato Giuditta Pasta and the tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini, but during Bellini's lifetime another soprano sfogato, Maria Malibran, was a notable exponent of the role. Julia Clara Pitt Byrne (nee Busk, christened 6 Jul 1819 – 1894) was a British writer of memoirs about celebrities of her time, as well as more serious social commentary. Biography She was the second daughter of Hans Busk, and the sister of Hans Busk the younger and Rachel Harriette Busk. She was also the sister-in-law of Sir Robert Loder, 1st Baronet through her sister Maria Georgiana. She married William Pitt Byrne in 1842, who was owner of ''The Morning Post'' and son of Charlotte Dacre. She converted to Catholicism in 1860. Giacinta Toso
Giacinta Toso (1807–1889), (also Toso Puzzi or Puzzi Toso), Maman Puzzi, was an Italian operatic soprano who had a significant career in England during the 1820s and 1830s before ill health forced her to retire from the stage. For over half a century thereafter, she and her husband maintained a musical salon in London through which many of the greatest musical stars of the age made their entry into musical life in England. Benjamin Lumley
Benjamin Lumley (1811 – 17 March 1875 in London) was a British North America-born British people, British opera manager and solicitor. Born Benjamin Levy, he was the son of a Jewish merchant, Louis Levy. Beginnings at His Majesty's Theatre Lumley's father was a clothes-dealer who had made his original fortune in British North America. The young Benjamin Levy was a pupil at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Lumley trained as a solicitor, and then studied for Bar association, the Bar under Basil Montagu. In this capacity he gave legal advice to the financially troubled manager of what was then Her Majesty's Theatre, His Majesty's Theatre, Pierre Laporte, who came to rely on him extensively. His Majesty's Theatre is a West End theatre situated in the Haymarket, London, Haymarket in the City of Westminster, London. The building, designed by Charles J.
