Istana Maimun
Maimoon Palace or Maimun Palace () is an ''istana'' (royal palace) of the Sultanate of Deli and a well-known landmark in Medan, the capital city of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Today, it serves as a museum. The name is the Arabic word for "blessing". Built by Sultan Ma'mun Al Rashid Perkasa Alamsyah in the years 1887–1891, the palace was designed by the Dutch architect Theodoor van Erp and covers 2,772 m2 with a total of 30 rooms. The palace has become a popular tourist destination in the city, not solely because of its historical heritage status, but also because of its unique interior design of the palace, combining elements of Malay cultural heritage, Islamic and Indian architecture, with Spanish and Italian furniture and fittings. It is the last surviving Malay palace, the rest having been destroyed in the 1946 social revolution. Nearby British troops protected it. Deli Sultanate
The Sultanate of Deli ( Indonesian: ''Kesultanan Deli Darul Maimoon''; Jawi: ) was a 1,820 km2 Malay state in east Sumatra founded in 1632 when a commander of the Aceh Sultanate, Gocah Pahlawan, conquered the area during the reign of Iskandar Muda. A tributary kingdom from 1630 it was controlled by various sultanates until 1814, when it became independent and broke away from the Sultanate of Siak.Dutch intervention in the mid-19th century resulted in a 1862 contract with the Dutch East Indies, which helped to recognise Deli's formal independence from Aceh and Siak. The East Sumatra revolution, also known as the East Sumatra social revolution (), began on 3 March 1946. Across 25 "native states", many sultanates were overthrown and mass killing of members of the aristocratic families were performed by armed ''pergerakan'' groups (Indonesian nationalists). To the opportunistic ''pergerakan'' militants (especially Communist Party of Indonesia leaders Abdoe'lxarim M. S. and Luat Siregar), the revolutionary movement was seen as one of the means for East Sumatra to be freed from colonial overlordship and to join the larger Indonesian National Revolution.
