Isola del Liri (simply known as ''Isola Liri'', Campanian: ) is an Italian town of Lazio, Italy, in the province of Frosinone. As its name implies, Isola is situated between two arms of the Liri. The many waterfalls of this river and of the Fibreno are used by factories. History Of Volscan origin, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire Isola del Liri was ruled by the Byzantines and then the Lombards. In the early Middle Ages the town was, alternatively, under the rule of the Byzantines and the Lombards, until it became part of the county of Sora in the Principality of Capua. Isola del Liri was the feud of the dell'Isola (de Insulae) family from the 12th century to the 14th century. Members of the family include Roffredo dell'Isola, Abbot of Monte Cassino, Count d'Arce, and Bartholomew dell'Isola who enjoyed the honors in the seat of Capuano Naples. Boncompagni
The Boncompagni is a princely family of the Italian nobility who settled in Bologna around the 14th century, but which was probably originally from Umbria. In 1572 they obtained the papal throne thanks to Ugo Boncompagni, who, with the name of Pope Gregory XIII, was elected pope. Since then, the rise of the family began. In fact, in 1579, the pope bought the Duchy of Sora from the Della rovere family for his son Giacomo, whose descendants reigned there as dukes until 1796. Later they also obtained the Principality of Piombino, following the marriage of Gregorio II Boncompagni with Ippolita Ludovisi, princess of Piombino and last of her dynasty. Eustachio Pisani
Eustachio Pisani (Sant'Elia Fiumerapido, 15 September 1866 - Isola del Liri, 10 March 1947) was an Italian entrepreneur. Biography Orphaned at an early age, he divided himself between working during the day and studying in the evening. In 1892, after completing his military service, he moved to Isola del Liri, where he was hired at the Cartiere Meridionali as an assistant until he became head of manufacture. After marrying Speranza Ippolito, heir of the Lanificio Ippolito, he took over the leadership, changing its name, in 1901, to Ditta Ippolito & Pisani. In a few years he expanded the production plant which went from 560 square meters to 11000 square meters, exploiting the waters of the Liri river for the production of electricity through the construction of a derivation canal. The production was gradually adapted to the flourishing paper industry in the area, with felts for technical articles of excellent quality, so much so that they were also in demand abroad. The Liri Blues Festival, founded in 1988, is one of the main blues music festivals in Italy. It takes place every year in July near Rome in Isola del Liri, a small town twinned with the city of New Orleans since 1997. The Liri (Latin Liris or Lyris, previously, Clanis; Greek: ) is one of the principal rivers of central Italy, flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea a little below Minturno under the name Garigliano. Source and route The Liri's source is in the Monte Camiciola, elevation , in the Monti Simbruini of central Apennines (Abruzzo, ''comune'' of Cappadocia). It flows at first in a southeasterly direction through a long trough-like valley, parallel to the general direction of the Apennines, until it reaches the city of Sora. In the upper part of Isola del Liri it receives the waters of Fibreno and then it divides into two branches which then rejoin, surrounding the lower part of the town (''Isola del Liri'' stands for ''Liri Island''). The House of Della Rovere (; literally "of the oak tree") was a noble family of Italy. It had humble origins in Savona, in Liguria, and acquired power and influence through nepotism and ambitious marriages arranged by two Della Rovere popes: Francesco Della Rovere, who ruled as Sixtus IV from 1471 to 1484) and his nephew Giuliano, who became Julius II in 1503. Terra di Lavoro (Liburia in Latin) is the name of a historical region of Southern Italy. It corresponds roughly to the modern southern Lazio and northern Campania and upper north west and west border area of Molise regions of Italy. In Italian the name means literally "Land of Work", but in fact derives from the ancient ''Liburia'', a territory north of Aversa which took its name from the ancient Italic tribe of the ''Leborini''.
