Isabella Indian Reservation
The Isabella Indian Reservation is the primary land base of the federally recognized Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation, located in Isabella County in the central part of the U.S. state of Michigan. The tribe also has some small parcels of off-reservation trust land in Standish Township, Arenac County, near Saginaw Bay and southeast of the city of Standish. Tribal lands are held in trust by the federal government on behalf of the nation. The tribe owns and operates the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant and the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino in Standish. The Tribe entered into an agreement with the state to expand its law enforcement jurisdiction to enforce laws on its members. This expanded area is for law enforcement on its members only and not the Mt. Pleasant community as a whole. Indian Reservation
An Indian reservation is an area of land held and governed by a federally recognized Native American tribal nation whose government is accountable to the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs and not to the state government in which it is located. Some of the country's 574 federally recognized tribes govern more than one of the 326 Indian reservations in the United States, while some share reservations, and others have no reservation at all. Historical piecemeal land allocations under the Dawes Act facilitated sales to non–Native Americans, resulting in some reservations becoming severely fragmented, with pieces of tribal and privately held land being treated as separate enclaves. Wise Township, Michigan
Wise Township is a civil township of Isabella County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,355 at the 2020 census. History Wise Township was established on January 24, 1872. It was named after George Wise, who was one of the first settlers to the area in the community of Loomis. Originally, Wise Township occupied two 36-square-mile survey townships in the northeast corner of Isabella County. The original boundaries of the township can be seen on an 1873 county map. Union Charter Township, Michigan
Union Charter Township is a charter township of Isabella County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,615 at the 2000 census and increased to 12,927 at the 2010 census. The city of Mount Pleasant is entirely surrounded by the township on incorporated land that was formerly part of the township, but the two are administratively separately. Weidman is an unincorporated community in Isabella County, Michigan, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP) for statistical purposes, but has no independent municipal authority. The population of the CDP was 959 at the 2010 census, up from 879 at the 2000 census. Rosebush, Michigan
Rosebush is a village in Isabella County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 368 at the 2010 census. The village is within Isabella Township. History Rosebush began in 1844 when Cornelius Bogan started a general store. He called the town ''Halfway'' because it was approximately halfway between Clare and Mount Pleasant. In 1868, the Ann Arbor Railroad came through the area and resident James Bush, while officially platting the land, bartered with the railroad some of his property for the right to have the station named after his wife, Rose. An addition to the community was later platted in 1873 by Elias B. Calkins and named ''Calkinsville'' – this was the name of the original post office on July 9, 1873.
